Advantages: Old fashioned 'B' movie Disadvantages: Very Dated
Destination Moon.
At the time of its pending release this film was massively promoted claiming to portray accurately but with the twist of adventure how man will get to the Moon and stay there. Unfortunately the public didn?t want the science all they wanted was the adventure and on that point the film falls into the dreaded ?B? movie genre.
The film follows Charles Cargraves, a kind of Howard Hughes of his day, as he struggles to get his spaceship off of the launch pad and to the Moon. However for Charles the space races really is on and the Russians are prepared to play dirty.
After several successful sabotage attempts on his rockets Charles goes for the ?sneaky hide the spaceship until it?s ready to launch? ploy! It is of course very easy to hide something that big, not.

Bringing down The Moon
By Jonathan Emmett and illustrated by Vanessa Cabban
After my recent and ever so successful trip to our local library we came back with about seven books all ranging in story and format. This particular book grabbed my attention, as it is in board book format so easy for Jack to grab hold of and try and turn the page himself! Of course getting it from the library is the cheapest way to enjoy the book but the price on the cover is a reasonable £4.99 pence.
The book consists of 24 large board type pages each one has a brilliant illustration coving the entire page with writing over the top of the picture. There are not too may words within the whole book but enough for a short story and perhaps ideal for a bedtime.
The story is basically about a small mole aptly called "mole" that sees the moon ...
Advantages: Pages open up and down, vertically & unfold into a huge spread! Disadvantages: None, just be careful that children understand that the moon is much too far away to reach with ladder!
***********
Children delight in the fold out pages, when the moon is a full moon it folds out to become larger than the book itself and the long, long ladder that Dad builds takes up a four page spread as it is folded out to show the sheer length of it!
Some have approached the meaning of the book in two ways:
* that a seemingly unreachable goal can actually be attained
* that a parent will move heaven and earth to bring their child the things they want most in the world.
For me and the children that I read it to, it is a simple story that is a good way of introducing the idea of the cycle of the moon. It's fun and captivates their interest but just beware that your arms can ache as a reader if you are holding it and all of the fold out sections to a large group of children, it's far better in very small groups or on a 1:1 basis.
