'Mean Everything To Nothing' is the second album from indie five-piece Manchester ... more
Orchestra. The band, who are actually from Atlanta, Georgia, take influence from the likes of Eels and Death Cab For Cutie to produce a wholesome, sophisticated sound - full of emotive lyrics and glistening guitars. Throughout lead vocalist Andy Hull does a fantastic job of drawing the listener into his imaginative world.
Advantages: A much-needed book Disadvantages: Some minor flaws
The Meaning of Everything by Simon Winchester is a fascinating book about the original concept and the eventual execution of the Oxford English Dictionary. It is written by Simon Winchester and is, indeed, a fascinating book.
However, Winchester makes some errors that do tend to spoil what would otherwise have been a exceptionally good read. For example, he commits the sin of over-researching, and, having done too much research, insists on cramming every atom of research into the book.
For example, it transpired that the official dinner marking the launch of the completed Oxford English Dictionary took place on Derby Day, and also on the same day that Edward, Prince of Wales, was holding a party. Winchester goes on to describe some of the newsworthy events of that day, plus the Derby Day, the dance and the dinner (even to listing ...
Advantages: Plenty of pop catchiness and experimentation from one of the most important musicians of his generation Disadvantages: A slight unevenness of tracks
general makes you realise just how important David Sylvian is: his consistent refusal to conform to any genre or stick to a tired routine like so many artists do means he, quite simply, enriches musical culture. You can't help but wish there were more like him.
For this reason I would recommend Everything and Nothingto almost anyone. There is enough pop catchiness for most people to enjoy, whilst more than enough experimentation for those that wish a little more of the unusual in their music. In the final analysis, one can but hope that Sylvian continues to produce more for the same - meaning of course, producing works of an eclectic and intriguing difference.
Sadly, you can no longer buy the three CD set which included some interesting extra tracks, including both a shorter version and a remix of The Scent of Magnolia. Nevertheless ...
Advantages: Uplifting, full of fun, vocally excellent, instrumentally striking. Disadvantages: The 5 minute spoken outro is incredibly unnecessary.
'Nothingto Prove' is the long awaited fifth studio album from the American hardcore punk band that is H2O. There was a seven year gap between the release of fourth album 'Go' and this 2008 Bridge Nine released record that is 'Nothingto Prove'; the name of the album makes the bands opinion very clear that they have nothingto prove to anyone here, the band has been together since 1995 now and has over the years more than proved its worth as an excellent hardcore punk band. The album consists of 10 tracks and this therefore provides for 29 minutes of music. A number of excellent guest vocalists feature here such as Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba, Gorilla Biscuits main man Anthony Civarelli, and Agnostic Front's vocalist Roger Miret also amongst others; it's great to hear the guest contributions here and always the bands music has much to ...

Album Notes
Not from Manchester, England, or an actual orchestra, the Atlanta-based ensemble Manchester Orchestra is an indie-rock act fronted by earnest singer/guitarist Andy Hull. At times sounding like a young Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Hull leads his band with restless, dynamic songs that range from the surging "Shake It Out" to the pensive "One Hundred Dollars" on this 2009 outing.
Album Reviews
Alternative Press (p.109) - "MEAN EVERYTHING TO NOTHING is deceptively complex and overtly Southern, giving the impression of a straight-ahead rock album, but riding countless dynamic shifts, instrumentation changes and separate song movements." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.54) - "It all comes to a thrilling climax with final song 'The River,' which builds and breaks, shudders and shakes, before descending into a desperate plea for redemption and change..."
