Meds marks the return, or the 'comeback' if you like of these grungy funky trio, otherwise known as Placebo. Fronted by Brian Molko.
This features a brand new collection of tortured tunes, doing what they do best, their first full stucio album in three years.
Although i feel their showcasing much more of a paied-down sound, the band seemed to have redirected their focus back to the raw rock of their earlier days. I especially like one of their 'ballad' types - 'Broken Promise' - which features R.E.M's Michael Stipe, which conveys the haunting atmosphere the band seem to have set out to conjure.
Meds was made with French producer Dimitri Tikovoi (Trash Palace), who made the band strip back their sound, doing away with studio trickery and taking Placebo back to their early indie-rock roots.
1. Meds - title track, nice intro, good rhythm, astounding lyrics.
2. Infra-Red - My personal favourite track on the album. Molko sings a lot more like the typical Placebo we're probably used to. This has a great drum beat on it and has a great chorus!
3. Drag - Another good song, apparently the third single due for release in the middle of the year. It sounds like it's going to be a fast, but slow song at the start, but it speeds up at the chorus and it sounds so powerful.
4. Space Monkey - Slow paced - and seems to give me a miserable feeling.
5. Follow The Cops Back Home - A relatively slow song, but is a good chill out song, and i'm a fan of the lyrics.
6. Post Blue - Catchy beat throughout. If not slightly repetative with the lyrics. However, this is one of my favourite songs on the album.
7. Because I Want You - Catchy song - and their current single, only downfall is that it repeats itself a bit to often!
8. Blind - A heavy slow song, with a nice keyboard playing within it.
9. Pierrot The Clown - Another slow one - the guitar reminds me of another of their Placebo tracks, "Ask for Answers".
10. Broken Promise - Featuring Michael Stipe from R.E.M fame - this song is filled with good kick in's at the chorus sections and other various parts.
11. One Of A Kind - Great lyrics, and a really cool guitar sound. I personally believe this could be a cracker for a live track.
12. In The Cold Light Of Morning - eerie sound at the beginning. quiet and slow. Personally find it a little boring. Hoped it would kick in, but it didn't, and seemed to drag on...
13. Song To Say Goodbye - bit boring, and durgy. Doesn't really appeal, and goes on a bit.
This is a good album, but it may take you a few listens as i did to really understand all the songs, but it's worth it!
Play.com - £8.95!
