Hilary Swank plays Teena Brandon, a 21-year-old from Lincoln, Nebraska, who lives under the alias Brandon Teena, believing that she is a man trapped in a woman's body. In a bid to feel accepted by her group of friends, she cuts her hair short, flattens her chest with tension bandages and puts socks down the front of her pants to look more masculine. She hopes one day to fall and love with a woman, declare her secret, and be understood.
Boys Don't Cry is a bleak and emotional tale concerned with the subject of sexual identity. Brandon is a character that feels the need to dress like a man to match the inner self. To "him", he is not living a lie, despite having to disguise his physical appearance with various attire; it's society, on the whole, that has the problem accepting he is different from the norm. The gender distinctions are ...
Advantages: DVD makes a great coaster. Disadvantages: An hour and a half of my life that I wont get back
The big red button phenomenon
Throughout your life, I am sure that you have had a moment when you know you should not do something, but you really want to. Like in the film's, when there is a big red button with 'don't push' written beside it. Try as you might, you cannot resist the urge to press it. Well, in my life this phenomenon has led me to grow my collection of films to include several movies from the 'video nasty' genre. Generally these films are terrible, and there should be no reason for you to want to watch them. However, there is something niggling me, right at the back of my otherwise empty head. Why was it banned? What is the reason why this film was initially not put up for public release?
Occasionally a real cracker comes up, like the scarily gory 'Cannibal Holocaust', or possibly the most disturbing film in ...
Advantages: Lots of big tunes Disadvantages: Repetitive
?Don?t Sweat The Technique? came out in 1992, and was named after one of the big singles from the album. It came as the final album from the legendary New York Hip Hop duo Eric B. & Rakim parted ways, and so in a final effort would push out one last killer release to keep fans happy before pursuing solo careers.
1. What?s On Your Mind??
To open the album, you have Rakim doing something which he tried out for the first time on the album prior to this as h adapts his rhymes to very different themes as this one is dedicated to a grl who he spots whilst on the subway, and he lets his rhythmic storytelling ability take over from this point onwards. The Isley Brother-esque feel to the grooves behind it give it a oftness which is rarely seen in their material.
**Four Stars**

Album Notes
Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Andy Bey (vocals); Gary Bartz (alto saxophone); Charles Tolliver (trumpet); Stanley Cowell (piano); Jymie Merritt (electric bass). Producer: Joel Dorn. Reissue producers: Donald Eflman, Naomi Yoshii. Recorded at RCA Studio B, New York, New York in June 1968. Originally released on Atlantic (1510). Includes liner notes by Ed Williams. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York). Max Roach is difficult, if not impossible, to pigeonhole; the bebop drumming revolution that he and Kenny Clarke spearheaded in the 1940s was merely one period in what would be a long and varied career. This 1968 release finds the ever-evolving drummer in a standard jazz quintet setting. Songs on MEMBERS, DON'T GIT WEARY range from the funk grooves of "Abstrutions," to the gospel-inflected title track, to the modern post-bop feel of "Absolutions." On the latter, the electric bass colors the song with a decidedly funkier feel. MEMBERS is representative of the emerging late '60s style of jazz that was then developing despite the loss of one of its key innovators, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The album hints at changes to come: flux that would cause jazz to collide with rock, R&B, and world music as jazz fusion, or the ultra-intense experimentalism that would finally reach its height in the '70s avant-garde of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. MEMBERS is an album that adds to jazz's great conversation, and for this reason alone, it's worth investigating.
