Linkin Park burst onto the scene a couple of years ago with the gazillion-selling Hybrid theory and after 18 months of waiting for some new stuff, (sorry I don't include re-mix albums, they are nearly always rubbish as was the case with LP's) here it is.
I bought this album the day it was released, dearly hoping it wouldn't turn out to be rubbish, and it hasn't.
This is the dreaded second album for a band with a huge debut, and I do believe they have just about pulled it off.
The important thing with a second album is to something quite difficult; make an album that is not just a recycled version of the first one but that also does not alienate the people who bought the first one by being too different.
In the case of Meteora, Linkin Park have just about got this delicate balance correct, but they have definately erred towards the sound of their first album, if you liked Hybrid Theory, you will doubtless enjoy this. I don't believe this to be bad though, as Hybrid Theory was good!
The album opens with what now seems to be a standard weird intro on rock albums, but it quite nicely phases into the first real track, Don't Stay. I really like this track, in fact its one of my favourites, many people wil notice a certain similarity with One Step Closer, again though this isn't bad as it was a great track.
We then move onto the first single, Somewhere I belong, which is another nice track, it gets of to a slow start, then brings in the guitars, then slows the pace down again and it all blends really nicely.
After Lying from you, which is nothing spectacular, we get Hit the floor, the first time Chester Bennington gets into full screech mode. Its a fantastic track, great heavy guitars and a real energy.
After Track 8 (Figure .09), we leave the heaviness of the early tracks behind a bit and get a bit more chilled with songs like Breaking the Habit, Session and the final track, Numb. I don't enjoy these as much as the heavier stuff but they are good stuff, and get much better after a few listens.
The album could certainly be a bit longer (its just 36 minutes) instead of including some video on the CD of the band spray painting stuff, but given the choice between better or more songs, the choice is obvious.
Overall, This album is a good follow-up, it has some really good tracks on it, and it represents a good purchase if you are into this type of music.
