Linkin Park are a group of 6 guys from southern california, aged between 24 and 27. The band formed in 1998 when co-vocalist Mike (Shinoda, 26) and Brad (Delson, 25) met at high school. Soon after Mike met the bands DJ, Joe (Hahn, 26) in Art College, Joe then introduced them to Pheonix (real name: Dave Farell, 26) the bands Bassist at the time their main vocalist was a local guy called Mark, after years and years of getting no-where Mark quit the band and the five remaining guys where handed a list with 3 phone numbers on of recomended vocalists. First on the list was Chester (Bennington, 27) they rang Chester, he auditioned down the phone and the guys automatically knew he was the missing piece. That was it Linkin Park as we know them today formed.
After the release of their debut Hybrid Theory in 2000, selling only 214 copys in its first week of release throughout the UK the band did not give up and the album became multi-platinum in over 14 countries
and because the fastest selling album for 2001 in the USA. They even won a Grammy for their hit "Crawling" for "Best Hard Rock Preformance".
Meteora had something to live up to, many people critisized Linkin Park for being "manufactured" or "wussy-rock" but in March 2003 they hit back with Meteora, a classic combination of hard-rock, soft-rock and fantastic lyrics.
The album comes with a booklet, each track explained with interesting facts with some rather interesting art-work from two of the bands members, Joe and Mike. The design of the album cover is annoying, made from cardboard, and not being able to click it shut is annoying as you don't feel as though your CD is safe from being scrathched.
Track by Track;;
01. FOREWORD A 13 second intro, recorded at Mikes house after the rest of the album as finished i can't really rate this track as it's nothing much.
02. DON'T STAY One of the heavier songs on the album lasting all of 3 minutes and 7 seconds don't stay has some excelent guitar riffs from Mike and Brad. Chester Benningtons vocals are on top form in this great track.
7/10
03. SOMEWHERE I BELONG The first release off this album, and it's easy to tell why. This track is more mainstream than the rest of the album. Nice lyrics and good vocals from both Mike and Chester, although to me this song can get a little repetative.
8/10
04. LYING FROM YOU One of my favourite tracks of this album, mainly vocals from Mike with back-ups in the chorus from Chester. More hip-hop inspired than some of the other tracks and hybrid of the hip-hop and rock genres. I never get tired of this song, it's got a fantastic beat!
9/10
05. HIT THE FLOOR Another great track, apparently the band wanted a heavy song with a hip-hop bounce and this is what they came up with. It worked. Nice lyrics, that are very easy to relate to. About liars and getting back what they deserve.
9/10
06. EASIER TO RUN Great soft rock ballad, amazing vocals from Chester with some really deep lyrics. You feel empathy for the writter, written from a so-called "free-writting" exercise you can tell these lyrics come from the heart.
10/10
07. FAINT GREAT SONG! Second release off the album, which sadly only entered the UK charts at number 15 due to lack of promotion i think. Short song lasting only 2 minutes 42 seconds, but it's so full of energy it seems over in half the time! Mainly Mike rapping, but with some fantastic vocals from Chester.
10/10
08. FIGURE.09 Another good song (i don't think there are any bad ones, actually!) Again good vocals, I can't really discribe this track in all honesty, just listen to it, trust me you'll be glad you did!
9/10
09. BREAKING THE HABIT Probally my least favourite on the album, but a nice song never-the-less. good vocals on chesters behalf but a bit too boring for me!
6/10
10. FROM THE INSIDE Great idea for a song, easy to relate too. Again good vocals from both Mike and Chester. Another short song that lasts only 2:53 seconds.
8/10
11. NOBODYS LISTENING A new sound for Linkin Park, you couldn't really compare to anything they have done before. The introduction of new instruments such as the japanesse flute, with a twist. Crap lyrics, admitidly though.
6/10
12. SESSION Great turntable session (no pun!) from Joe, featured on the soundtrack to The Matrix Reloaded not really so much of a song, so therefore i won't rate it!
13. NUMB Amazing song, I swear I've came close to tears hearing this song before. Absolutly stunning vocals and great lyrics that mean a lot. And I think a lot of people could sympathise. This song is released early September in the UK, look out for this storming up the charts!
10/10
Overall I think this is a fantastic album, if you liked Hybrid Theory, you'll love this - take it from me!
