Meteora is a very strange name for an album and i do wonder why they called it that! I first came across meteora when one of my friends was listening to it on her portable CD-Player of which she let me listen to the album and wondered whether it was them or not and it was. I had heard of linkin park from a few previous songs on their last album but wasn't that keen to learn of them until i heard their second album. After a year of their second album being released i realised that they have brought out a few songs from that album of which their most recent is 'Breaking the Habit' (track 9).
Linkin park have been around for a fair while now and i can actually tell you they've been around for six years as they first formed in 1999. Their first album 'Hybrid Theory' was released on 24.10.2000 and their second 'Meteora' on 25.03.2003.
Linkin park consist of six members and these are: Joseph Hahn - DJ Dave "Phoenix" Farrell - Bassist Rob Bourdon - Drummer Brad Delson - Guitarist Mike Shinoda - MC and Vocalist Chester Bennington - Singer
There are thirteen tracks on Meteora and these are as follows:
1. Foreword: This effectively is an intro into the next song, which is 15 seconds long and sounds like a chisel banging against a brick and then the sound of smashing
glass. Not the most entertaining of tracks of which i always skip but when first listening to it, it is a good intro into the next song.
2. Don't Stay: This track kicks of from the intro with other instruments involved such as an electronic guitar and jives of rapping material. This is a medium paced song with Chester singing normally and then screaching during the chorus. Not the best of songs i personally think but the album has to start of somwhere and it's with this song!
3. Somewhere I belong: A weird tune to begin with i can't really describe it but the tune i can describe is just before Mike starts singing and this is with some continuous notes from an electronic piano and some slight rapping content of which the guitar and drums kick into effect. An excellent medium paced song with both Chester and Mike singing accompanied with the guitar and drums.
4. Lying from you: A sort of sinister feel from a quiet tune from a clarinet of which the drums and guitar then blast their way into the song. Mike and Chester again both sing in this song at a medium pace, blending in really well with the guitar, drums and DJ/rapping techniques. A really good song to let your anger out to!
5. Hit the floor: Again another weird tune to start of with from the DJing side of the band but Mike soon gets into the song with a guitar and drums. Chester assists with this song during the chorus of which he screams his lungs out! This is medium paced song where you bop your head to start of with and then when it gets to the chorus you jump and down as if you were at a concert! Brilliant!
6. Easier to run: A slow/medium paced song, a lot more gentle than the previous songs with Mike and Chester both singing. The guitar, drums and occasional rapping content occupy this song alongside Mike and Chester. A slightly chilled out song with a slight edge to it.
7. Faint: A medium paced song starting of with the guitar and drums as well as some DJing. Fairly quiet song to start of with until it gets to the chorus where Chester starts putting power into the song with his lungs. Around 2.10 Mike and Chester put fierce into the song like a question and answer thing where they take turns to talk/scream accompanied with the loud guitar and drums. An excellent song.
8. Figure.09: Medium/fast paced song that sounds like a chinese orientated tune with the drums then entering into it as well as the guitar. Mike talks very quickly in this song with Chester then singing/screaming loudly in the chorus. A brilliant tune.
9. Breaking the habit: Weird DJing in the tune to start of with and at a very quick pace indeed! Chester sings normally in this song but very quickly accompanied with light taps from the drums and weird DJing/rapping. If you see the video to this you will notice that all the band members are portrayed as cartoon characters but with the tones and textures of a pencil.
10. From the inside: Quiet beginning gradually getting louder with the use of the guitar and drums. Chester sings normally in this song until he gets to the chorus where he sort of screams and Mike occasionally joining in with the verses throughout the song. A medium paced song with the instruments used heavily as a proper 'rock' song.
11. Nobody's listening: Another chinese orientated tune but with the bassist used in this as well as excellent DJing and rapping. Not a rock song at all, far from it, not sure what genre this comes under but i really like it! Medium paced song with Mike and Chester brinign out the best in this song. This song is excellent and just proves how well linkin park work well as a team - you'll know what i mean when and if you liten to this song!
12. Session: A medium paced song which is really quiet to start of with using a single tune and then really blasting this song with excellent DJing and rapping skills. No Mike or Chester used in this for singing just a pure chilled out song proving how good Joseph and Mike are at rapping.
13. Numb: A medium paced high pitched tune to begin with and then the use of the guitar and drums occur. Chester sings gently throughout the verses with the use of Mike at times and then Chester singing/screaming during the chorus saying 'I've become so numb'. A brilliant song to end the album with leaving you wanting more.
This is definitely an album to listen to if you're really angry and want to let it all out as instead of tearing my bedroom apart, i jump around it listening to this album, saves a lot of money indeed! A couple of tracks are quite chilled out songs which are worth listening to when in bed but overall this album is purely loud and eager to get you motivated or let all your anger out!!!
This album is aimed at people of the ages 14/15+ to whatever ages as whether you go to school, college or work and get stressed out by it then this is the album to listen to, to let that stress out - trust me it does work!
If you're a linkin park fan then you might notice that this is slightly different from the last as they have gone one step further with the use of rock and rapping material. If you haven't bought it yet and you're a fan of them then i reccomend you buy it as it is a good listen but indeed their first album is still slightly better.
Rock/rap fan? This album is definitely worth listening to if not worth buying as it has that edge of rock and the use of rapping blends in really well.
Overall: I love this album as linkin park have pushed the boat out with the use of rock and rap making them blend in so well you would just think it was good rock. This album isn't as good as their last one but is definitely worth listening to and even better - worth buying.
I hope this review has helped!
Happy listening :) :) :)
