Hearing me arguing with my mate, Nika, the other day, about whether we find out in chapter 5 or 6 of R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet, that his wife's been cheating with the police man that pulled him over (I swear it's chapter 5, in 6 Rufus has to decide between Chuck and Cathy!), noone would ever guess that I have a secret passion for a group who don't appear on universalurban.com! But it's true, and though I would never announce it to my media class, the unofficial Kanye West Fan Club, I find myself really enjoying the music of Linkin Park (SCANDALOUS)! However I do have it from a reliable source, that I am not the only person with these opinions, so I don't feel so ashamed anymore.
I don't actually own this album, my little brother bought it a couple of years ago, but I kept stealing it then, and I still do now, he thinks that he is above that sort of music, pretending to be interested in my cousin's 'in the garage and nowhere else' band, that's just so he has a friend, my brother is just a little bit weird, or maybe that's just my perception of him!
The CD box is nothing extraordinary, it shows a man spraying paint, in a black and greyey orange colour. Unlike other CD boxes, it is cardboard and opens up into 3x the length of the original front cover, it includes a booklet about the songs, including lyrics and facts about each song.
Linkin Park describe themselves as an alternative nu-metal
group, they comprise of Chester (Band Vocalist), Mike (Band HipHop and rhyme Vocalist), Brad (Band Guitarist), Phoenix (Band Bassist), Rob (Band Drummer) and Joesph (Band DJ).
In past reviews I have written thorough, but repetitive opinions on all tracks on the album in question, but they go on forever, I am going to try a new format, by which I thoroughly review my top 5 favourite tracks from the album, and then briefly rate the others, this way not dragging on and boring you with needless details. We start on track 3.
Track 3 - Somewhere I Belong (03.33) This song is great, really chilled, it has a calming, slow beat which neutralises the fast guitar and the singing is also quite slow which adds to the whole effect. I'm not altogether too sure about how to describe what exactly is happening in this song, or how it works, but it does and the effect is great. Maybe the reason that so many I, and many other people besides myself, like Linkin Park is because we can all relate with the song lyrics, 'I'd get lost in the nothingness inside of me, I was confused' I can see how people relate with the song, wanting to be somewhere they belong, somewhere they fit in, somewhere they can be themselves and be happy with being themselves. 9/10
Track 6 - Easier to Run (03.24) This song is truly amazing, the way it swaps from slow music, to fast music, to slow music again. It works so well, making the song not so fast it is mightily annoying, but not so slow that it is downright depressing. As rapper Eminem once said, 'Everyone has sh*t in their lives.' And this song is dealing with that sh*t, it is all about the pains that people feel, 'Wounds so deep they never show' Everyone has these wounds, and this song relates to everyone, everyone who knows that 'it's easier to run, replacing this pain with something numb.' 9/10
Track 9 - Breaking the Habbit (03.16) This song has a real power to it, produced by the clever combination of piano, drums, strings and great lyrics. Linkin Park have a real talent, and all the songs on this album have great tunes, but this is definitely one of the best. While the song is in no way slow it doesn't feel fast, it feels just right, how it should be. This is the pure genius of the song, not many artists could do this. 'I'll paint it on the walls, Coz I'm the one at fault, I'll never fight again, And this is how it ends.' This really is one of the best songs, my second favourite of the album, really worth listening to. 9.5/10
Track 10 - From the Inside (02.53) I love the way the chorus on this song is heavy, fast and loud, but the verse is almost plain, letting the lyrics shine out. The singing combined with lines of rap make the song interesting, and adds so much meaning and energy to the lyrics. The song is all about keeping yourself together after everything and everyone you knew has seemed to betray you, 'I don't know who to trust, No surprise, Everyone feels so far away from me, Heavy thoughts sift through dust, And lies.' The lyrics, as you can see, are very powerful and come from the heart, they really make this song what it is. 9/10
Track 13 - Numb (03.05) This has to be my overall favourite, even before I heard the version with Jay-Z, I loved this song, it has power and strength, all of which make it an amazing song to listen to, if you haven't already, I recommend you try to find the one with Jay-Z, it is an amazing combination that works amazingly well. The song has an ease and a class to it which have made it the certain hit that it is today, and gave it the edge that Jay-Z thought he could work into. While everyone tries to conform with a stereotype they believe they are meant to be, whether by pressure from the media, or their peers, this song sings about how we are all best being the person we are, with our own personalities, that is when we know who that person is. This song deals with losing a personality, 'I'm tired of being who you want me to be, Feeling so faithless, Lost under the surface …All I want to do, Is be more like me And less like you' This song is one of my favourite songs ever, not just from this album, with or without Jay-Z it has that umph that makes a successful song. I love it so very much. 10/10
Other songs on this album include: Track 1 - Foreword Track 2 - Don't stay - A powerful song very well done and produced. 8/10 Track 4 - Lying from you - Another powerful, but beautiful track. 8/10 Track 5 - Hit the floor - Interesting song with an interesting chorus, however interesting isn't always that good. 7/10 Track 7 - Faint - Not my favourite, but a perfectly decent song, which will appeal to a certain type of musical appreciators. 7/10 Track 8 - Figure. 09 - I love the use of rap against singing, it works exceptionally well in this song. 8/10 Track 11 - Nobody's listening - An interesting use of Japanese flute, original, but I don't particularly like this song. 6/10 Track 12 - Session - A musical track, purely of instruments, more likely to be appreciated by Rock music fans, not my type of music unfortunately. 6/10
The CD claims to be enhanced, but I have never managed to get anything out of this, it says there is the first single, a 17 min short film, 'The Art of Meteora' and more. This might be on a separate CD my brother has lost I'm afraid I can't review it.
Overall I would indeed recommend this albums, it's range of musical genius and lyrics will cater for a lot of tastes. Don't go around snubbing Linkin Park just because you have G-Unit tattooed to your chest, they really are worth a chance, just open up your mind.
My brother probably got this from Sainsbury's for £9.99, however being quite old you won't find it there anymore. It is available from www.amazon.co.uk for £8.99, New and Used available from around £5.

Good review and a good idea about doing just your top five tracks. It is a great album I love linkin park and I saw them in '03 and they were one of the most superb bands I have seen. Trace xx

Great review. I depise this band, seen them live too and they were dreadful. Each to their own I guess.
Meteora, Linkin Park's second studio effort (not counting the 2002 remix ... more
albumReanimation), overflows with glossy production values and Big Rock oomph, fully embracing the pop instincts of theirHybrid Theorydebut. For many,Theorysounded inexcusably cor...
