Linkin Park is a Californian nu-metal band mixing harmonic and scream vocals with emcee rapping. Their first album, 'Hybrid Theory', is critically and commercially acclaimed, and is full of raw talent and passionate music. They have since developed their style, with each element improving with experience. As a band, they have sold more than 50 million albums.
'Meteora' is the band's third album second album, released in 2003. It contains the smash hit 'Numb', which was used as the them tune to the film 'Starsky and Hutch' starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. This track was also remixed with Jay-Z for their collaboration album in 2004. It also features the single 'Somewhere I Belong'.
These are the tracks:
1. Foreword 2. Don't Stay 3. Somewhere I Belong 4. Lying From You 5. Hit The Floor 6. Easier To Run 7. Faint 8. Figure.09 9. Breaking The Habit 10. From The Inside 11. Nobody's Listening 12. Session 13. Numb
The first thing that strikes me about this album in comparison to their first album Hybrid Theory is the level has been stepped up. The lead vocals are more intense and emotional from Chester Bennington and the rapping is more dynamic and versatile from emcee Mike Shinoda. The whole album seems to have taken on a more relaxed feel to it.
Track 6 stands out for me, probably because Bennington's 'scream' vocals are more contained for this track. He uses something called a scream hook to create some of the more intense sounds you often hear from him. A lot of these tracks were written on their tour bus along the way, and the creation of this album does seem to have a bit more time taken over it than Hybrid Theory did.
Lyrically, all tracks are of a higher level, so the whole musical experience is more complete. If anything, the main thing about the album is that nothing seems raw any longer. It is all very controlled and deliberate.
I like the majority of the tracks. It is nice that they have included an instrumental track in 'Session', but I'm not a fan despite the musical skill involved in the track, and 'Figure.09' should have remained in its original format without the rapping involved in the tune, but apart form that I am impressed with this offering from the nu-metal group. It is not my favourite Linkin Park album, but it does contain 'Numb' which I hold in very very high esteem. It has chords which make my spine tingle. I rate this album at 4 stars out of 5.
The album is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98 new, £1.35 used.
Thanks for reading.
