Mehldau,Metheny/Mehldau, was an intimate, almost chamber-like affair, albeit one with some heated improvisations.Quartet, their second meeting, finds them sounding like a stripped-down version of the Pat Metheny Group. But this is a leaner, looser band, with freewheeling support from Mehldau's trio of drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Larry Grenadier on all but a couple of tracks. The guitarist and pianist are a good match for Metheny's dramatic and lyrical inclinations, seducing the more angular and cerebral Mehldau like teasing threads from a knot. Mehldau is a pianist of exploratory dimensions, and he gives himself free reign here. There's intimate, Jim Hall/Bill Evans-style duos like "Ring of Life" that you might expect, but also out-and-out free-form electric excursions like "Summer Day" that recall Metheny's 1980s work with Billy Higgins and Charlie Haden onRejoicing. While maintaining a unified sound,Quartetis nevertheless an album of contrasts, as Metheny drives into his synth guitar on "Legend," tossing in a heavy-metal bridge, but also goes a bit pastoral and medieval on "Ahmid-6," strumming what sounds like a harp-guitar, although it could be his guitar-synth. With deeply empathetic playing and a broad stylistic palette,Quartetnever wears thin.--John Diliberto

Advantages: Fantastically realised world, focused plot Disadvantages: Minimalist detail, not a cohesive collection
The Earthsea Quartet compiles Ursula Le Guin's first four novels set in the Iron Age styled world of Earthsea. The first three books of the original trilogy were published over four years, from 1968 to 1972. A fourth book was released in 1990, erroneously subtitled the last tale of Earthsea but it ended up being the springboard for further tales.
The four books are set in the known lands of Earthsea; made up of a central archipelago encircled by four polar reaches and the Kargad Lands. Areas outside the provided map are unknown; however a land of the dragons is speculated to exist in the far west.
Earthsea is mostly populated by a dark-browned skinned people. The white Kargs are given a slightly more barbaric presentation than other races, shown to be less literate and superstitious of the practise of magic. Different characters from ...

How can I put it - this album is one of Mehldau's best.
The band play every tune absolutely sensationally - with blinding energy and vigour.
Every one of Brad's solos is totally and utterly flawless, taking you on a journey that twists and turns through every imaginable area. A particular highlight of the album is the track "All The Things You Are". As only Mehldau could do - he plays the tune in 7, up a semitone in A major! Also the Miles Davis tune Solar is played at a roaring tempo, providing a tapestry for a brilliant piano solo from Mehldau.
I defy any jazz lover not to be blown away by this album which really showcases this trio at their best. ...
Advantages: CD can be used as a wall decoration or disco ball alternative Disadvantages: horrid - a true torture tune 68 minutes i wont forget!
- i adore saxaphone with a slow and soulful expression which unfortunately this album lacks completely.
This is a type of modern music jazz which trys an alternative approach to funk jazz - it's a type i havent come across before and honestly can say did not enjoy one little bit. True to say it's being a bit ambitiousand attemps to delivery jazz on the front line.
Unfortunaltely it didnt do anything for me and I won't be making the mistake of buying anything from PatMetheny in the future.
There is a variety of instruments used throughout the 68 min duration - of which make a horrid racket in an attempt to experimentally modernise jaz. This is something that shouldn't really be attempted. Jazz is as it is, a soulful and expressional artform that does not require tinkering or 'hipping' up to ''get down with the kids''.
