Advantages: loads of history Disadvantages: a whole lot of walking
Mexico has to offer.
Mexico in itself is one of the most amazing countries, you could ever visit. You can find some of the most amazing hand made gifts from all parts of Mexico, within the little shops. And of course, don't forget the culture, as it's everywhere. You can't go anywhere in Mexico without seeing the culture and the history of each city or village. And in Oaxaca, it isn't any different.
Oaxaca is a moderate sized state and is located on the very bottom of Mexico's west side. In fact, it's so far near the bottom, that it's closer to Guatamala than it is to Mexico City, which is fairly close to the middle of the country itself.

Advantages: The air here smells of chocolate! Disadvantages: Enough for a couple of days, but no more

Mexico City was struck by an earthquake last week, but Oaxaca's ground remained nice and still while I was there. From ...

Advantages: Off the beaten track Disadvantages: The lawless roads
Petrol can be a bit of a problem in the remoter parts of Mexico. Filling stations are few and far between, and with this in mind we had come equipped with a road-map that supposedly had them all marked on it.
Heading south into Chiapas, which qualifies as remote even by Mexican standards, I thought I'd planned it pretty well. We would be just about dry when we reached the filling station at Playas de Calazajá, where we were due to turn off the main highway. We could then head for the hills with a full tank. What's more, we were in good time to reach Palenque, our next stopping point, by nightfall.
Beneath the Pemex canopy at Playas de Calazajá we found nothing but a blanket of wet concrete punctured only by the pipes that marked where the pumps were due to be installed. The map was ahead of the reality.
We were lucky ...
