the gamut of adolescent interest, from girls to, uh, girls. And they matched that wide scope with an equally wide array of three-chord tunes. So why is this such an essential record? One word: Milo. Singer Milo Aukerrman--who really was off to college after recording it--yelps "I'm Not a Punk" and "I'm Not a Loser" with such desperation that it's almost touching. Then again, the nyah-nyah attitude that crops up just about everywhere else marks him as the sorta guy who'd probably pick your pocket as you were looking for a hankie to help dry those eyes. A quintessential American punk document. --David Sprague

Advantages: Catchy classic punk-pop tunes Disadvantages: A few filler songs

The band really have tonnes of anger and you can tell this from every aspect of song, from the vocails to the drums. The vocial are what carry this band, as without them they would have just blended in to every other band of this type (but are slightly shouty). The guitar, bass and drums are reasonably simple (on par with bands like Greenday) but played with passion and a very fuzzy distrotion.
The highlight of this ablum are Hope, I'm not a loser and Suburban home. All of which would hold their own on any punk-pop comperlation. But like most album there are a few songs you feel are just there to make the album longer like I wanna be a bear.
This is a great album by great band with just a few weak songs. Please rate and comment, thanks. Cam
Advantages: Early Material. Some Good Songs Here Disadvantages: Way Too Short!
The Descendents. One of America's finest punk bands. They've inspired many bands to this day and from almost all their material, it's obvious to see why: catchy melodies, short, fast songs and some well written lyrics.
This E.P contains their early work which was before their classic album 'MiloGoesToCollege'. What is to be expected? Short, snappy pop-punk/punk rock tunes.
1) My Dad Sucks: 35 second opener, 'My Dad Sucks' just blasts it's way through the speakers. There is no care by the band as they thrash through this ditty. Quite strong to say it's not even a minute long.
2) Mr. Bass: This is a personal favourite. Mid-paced punk with a sluggish sound. Lyrically, this is quite daft and shows their comical side to lyric writing. Still used in their set lists today (when they do tour that is, it's quite a rare sight now ...

Album Notes
With 15 tracks in 22 minutes, the Descendents about brevity in a big way. The Southern California punk rock that the band defined was funny, snotty, fast, and distinctly un-subtle (see "I Wanna Be a Bear" for proof). Interestingly, the Descendents sound less "tinny" than many of their contemporaries and this makes their music seem much less dated than one might expect--it also may be one reason for the lasting interest in the band. Eventually Descendents-style punk mutated into the pop-punk popularized by Green Day and their ilk, but the original stuff stills rocks the house. The first verse of "Suburban Home" is a perfect example of the Descendents version of sarcasm: "I wanna be stereotyped, I wanna be classified, I wanna be a clone, I wanna suburban home." Other standouts include the bass-driven home-life rant of "Parents," the romantic (at least as romantic a snotty teen is going to get) longing of "Hope," and the grudgingly concern-filled sound of the anti-addiction warning "Bikeage." This is California punk rock at it's best, and probably the best of the Descendents albums.
