Body&Soulis dedicated to original material. Joss features as co-writer on nearly all of its songs, with veteran singer Betty Wright still retaining a strong influence as co-producer and vocal coach. Stone's old-style grittiness remains intact, but there are moves to surround her emotive voice with a modernised R&B setting. Stone's highly respected team includes keyboardists Benny Lattimore and Timmy Thomas, and drummers Cindy Blackman and ?uestlove (from The Roots). Joss has also collaborated with Lamont Dozier and Portishead's Beth Gibbons. The opening "Right To Be Wrong" lays down the gauntlet of independence, riddled with pricking guitar fills, surging organ and subtle horn swells. The banal "Jet Lag" and "Understand" are her least inspiring efforts, the latter featuring some of the album's worst lines ("I keep our song on repeat/On my iPod, even when I sleep/And in my dream I'm holding you/Alone on an island, just we two"). Stone's lyrics are trite throughout, but they're merely a vehicle for her intense vocal expression. Several tunes are spoiled by clumping drum programs, but even within this context, Stone's voice rises higher. The album's first single, "You Had Me", could be coming straight from Destiny's Child. The compulsive reggae lope of "Less Is More" would be a wiser choice. "Security" might be an MOR ballad, but even this ascends towards its conclusion--Stone backed up by an incendiary guitar solo. Her voice is always mixed suitably high, and ultimately it's Stone's sheer vocal prowess that makes this album succeed. --Martin Longley

Perhaps you might not recognise the name, Joss Stone. You might not recognise her in the street either. But the chances are you’ll recognise this girl’s voice. There are few people in this world blessed with a truly unique voice: Steven Tyler is one of them, Heather Small is (unfortunately) another, and Joss Stone must surely be added to this category. Her first album, The Soul Sessions, sold over two million copies and hit the top 10 in 13 countries, despite being originally planned as an informal release to generate publicity for this, her second offering. The Soul Sessions was really just an album of covers, put together fairly quickly with the sole purpose of showcasing Joss’s vocal talents. Here, predictably, Ms Stone tries her hand at co-writing a few songs. – 11 out of the 14 on the album, to be precise. It is a pretty good effort, particularly for a seventeen-year-old girl, but I imagine the presence of soul legends Betty Wright and Desmond Child amongst others helped more than a little.
The album opens in a very laid-back style, with the second single from this album, Right To Be Wrong. It’s a soulful track where Joss asserts her independence, possibly in reply to the (few) critics who dismissed her first album as unoriginal: “Got a right to be wrong, I gotta sing my own song, I might be singing outta key, but it sure feels good to me.”
We then move into a couple of more upbeat numbers, Jet Lag and You Had Me. Both are quite poppy, in fact you can imagine You Had Me being performed by someone like Jamelia or Destiny’s Child. It’s easily the most mainstream song on the album. Jet Lag takes a while to get going, but when it does it has a nice jazzy rhythm to it.
Joss’s voice is pretty good on Spoiled, but as a down-tempo ballad, it doesn’t really seem to fit in here, between You Had Me and two of the highlights of the album, Don’t Cha Wanna Ride and Less Is More. Both are slightly poppy songs, extremely catchy and good showcases for Joss’s voice. Security is absolutely amazing, it starts as a beautiful ballad, then escalates into a fantastically soulful finale, for those of you who own The Soul Sessions this reminds me a lot of Some Kind Of Wonderful.
The upbeat run of songs continues through Young At Heart and Snakes and Ladders, which for me is a quite interesting song lyrically. One of the problems with the album is that the lyrics in places are kind of bland, although this doesn’t matter so much because really they’re only a showcase for Joss’s voice. Understand is for me one of the best songs on the album, although many dismiss it as simply an uninspiring ballad. I like it for the melody which is kind of quirky, and again for Joss’s voice. I know I keep going on about that but I love it!
Don’t Know How is fairly middle-of the road, a bit of a filler song to be honest. I don’t think it would ever perform well as a single, likewise Torn and Tattered. Killing Time is one of the tracks where the adlibs get a bit much – as Joss herself croons in Less Is More, “too much of a good thing can be bad.” At this point, track 13, those who aren’t huge fans of Joss will probably be a bit fidgety.
Closing the album is Sleep Like A Child, a slow ballad with a beautiful performance from Joss, and the bonus track, Holding Out For A Hero. No, not the one Bonnie Tyler did. This is a track I thought was really weird at first, but now I adore it. Joss’s voice is completely different on this song, and the emotion she has turns it from a strange piano ballad to a desperate, haunting piece which draws you right in.
Mind, Body and Soul has already done quite well in the album charts, as did You Had Me in the singles chart. Right To Be Wrong entered at 29 this week, although in my opinion it was the wrong song to choose as a single – I would have gone for Don’t Cha Wanna Ride, Less Is More, or maybe Security.
If I could have given this album 4½ stars I would have, but I don’t think it’s worth the full five purely because there’s not much variety, it all starts to sound the same after a while listening to it. It’s really Joss’s vocal talents that make this album a success, rather than the song quality, which isn’t as consistent as it could be. It is refreshing though, to listen to an album that isn’t over-produced and polished to within an inch of it’s life. All of the songs have a natural feel to them, and I believe a few of them were recorded in ‘real time’, which is a novelty with a lot of the newer, younger artists today.
The album inlay is nothing special, although it just include the lyrics, which is a bonus. There’s a few pictures of Ms Stone, who, my male contemporaries assure me, is “well fit.” She does tend to overdo the hippie look a bit in the pictures, but it’s not really a big deal.
So the real question: is this album for you? If you liked The Soul Sessions, you’ll love it. If you like Joss’s voice, you’ll love it. Unless you’ve had a really bad experience with Joss or her music in the past, I can’t really imagine that you’ll hate it. You might not be a huge fan, but there’s just nothing about this album controversial enough to be hated. It’s simply a young girl with an extremely precocious voice singing a bit of old-school soul mixed with some more modern, R‘n’B beats, and doing it well.
Advantages: some great songs if you appreciate good music, joss's voice is amazing Disadvantages: can take a while to get into and unless you love her voice it can feel a bit repetative.
...however ill probably change my mind when i hear the song again!!! This song i really a must hear, worth buying the album for definatly!!
Ok so, young at heart, nice background music, and as always some good vocals, another song I really like! The songs about how not matter how much you love your patner then people will still try and split you up if they dont approve, this is one of my favorite tracks.
Im probably gonna sound really repetative, ... ...a relationship comitment is important to her and that shes fed up of not knowing whats going on, and theyre always up and down (like snakes and ladders which is the title of the song). Understand is about, trust in a relationship and basically if you ring and the phone doesnt get picked up it doesnt mean you have to worry, because theyre the one you love. Some great lyrics here worth listening to i couldnt pick out my favorite lone in this song becasue ...

Advantages: Stone has a great voice Disadvantages: But it's a predictable pop-r 'n' b sound
Although I quite enjoyed Joss Stone's debut album "The Soul Sessions", it didn't really live up to the hype. It proved that Stone can sing, but so what? Lots of people can sing. Hear'Say could sing, but that didn't really help them much in the long run, as you need to be able to back up a decent singing performance with a decent song.
Stone managed that part of things admirably, at least, by putting out an album of mostly soul covers, albeit soul ... ...a nice change from the standard bubblegum pop sound around at the moment, it caused a number of people to put her on a pedestal, comparing her to the likes of Aretha Franklin. This seemed to me to be a bit of an over-reaction, as Stone's got a good voice, without a doubt, but not that good.
The one down side to her "The Soul Sessions" album was that it felt in parts as if Stone was just singing the songs she had been told to, not the songs she wanted ...

Advantages: Five good tracks. Disadvantages: Ten mediocre or weak tracks.
Mind, Body & Soul is Joss Stone's 2nd album. From reading a little about this album she apparently saw it more as 'hers' than the first album 'Soul sessions'. This is evident in the lyrics of the first song 'Right to be wrong' where she sings "I've got a right to be wrong, my mistakes will make me strong", and goes on to change that second line in one verse with "Gotta sing my own song".
This is altogether a rather more mature offering than her ... ...certainly loved the use of vocals on the first album and the retro soul style. Anyway the notoriously difficult second album, does she cut it?
Track 1. Right to be wrong.
Lyrically great if you are 30 and been beholden to a record company for years, or a partner, but c'mon, she was one year on from a platinum selling CD, and moaning about stuff. I feel this is a self indulgent song with double meanings throughout. That being said, musically and ...

Advantages: Fantastic lyrically and musically Disadvantages: May seem abit sameish to some
''Mind, Body & Soul'' is the second album for the sixteen year old, accomplaished soul singer, Joss Stone. Her first album ''The Soul Sessions'' become a best seller without much promotion. ''The Soul Sessions'' ironically was orignally intended to be a promotional recording which would be used to promote a second and more original album ''Mind, Body & Soul''. But somehow after word spread over the talent and complexity and the fulfillment of soul ... ...as an album worldwide.
''Right To Be Wrong'' is a nice soul ballad, with a poppy chorus. This is a wonderful song, wonderfullally sang. Joss Stone's voice really shows on this song.
''Jet Lag'' is an amazing track - it is very soulful and jazzy. The chrous is amazing. The backing drums fit perfectly with Joss's voice. ''You Had Me'' is a wonderful, pop track. This is the first single to be released at the back of this album. The track is extremely ...

Theres only one song I truely dislike and thats 'Jet Lag' it makes me feel like I have it! Its quite dull and doesnt go anywhere and would have been unnoticed if never put on the album but there are some gems on here. For more info read on...

You Had Me - Possibly her most upbeat and modern verging on R&B song to date. This was a brilliant showcase for her second album. Its instantly catchy and really shows maturity in voice and style merging R&B with Soul/Jazz effortlessly.
Spoiled - This wasnt instant ...

Advantages: Smooth listening, and thereputic to the ears. Disadvantages: I dont have any :)
This album is honestly one of the best albums that i have listened to all year, this album is so much betetr than Mind, Body and Soul.
Mind, Body and soul, was a very good album, and at the time i was impressed by it, but once Introducting JossStone was released i fell in love with it. introducing JossStone, show Joss's vocal range alot more, than previously released material by her.
Joss has done alot of colaborations for her new album, and I like the songs that she has colaborated.
Music - This is one of my favorite songs on the album, collaborated with Lauren Hill, the music in this track is very "Flowing" and I can relate, as i think most people can. This song shows the love that many people including Joss have for music.
Tell Me Bout' It - This song just has a very catchy beat - Also one of my favorite songs ...
Advantages: Lovely Collection of songs, a combination of relaxing and fun songs. Disadvantages: The weakest song is probably 'All the Kings Horses'...However the CD has generally strong tracks.
. Victim of a Foolish Heart: Quite a nice song.
5. Dirty Man: I think this is a slightly unusual song. However, it will grow on you the more you listen to it.
6. Some Kind of Wonderful: Another 'feel good' song.
7. I've Fallen in Love with You: You will fall in love with this track.
8. I Had a Dream: This is a slow song. It is certainly not my favourite track, but I wouldn't say I dislike it.
9. All the King's Horses: My least favourite track, I found it a little boring. However I don't doubt that it will appeal to some people as it is fairly unique.
10. For the Love of You: A lovely track.
Overall I enjoyed listening to this CD; I thought it was brilliant. It has a mixture of slow songs and feel good songs. However, if I was to recommend a JossStone CD, I would definately chose 'MindBody and Soul'. It has more ...

For MIND, BODY & SOUL, released only a year after her 2003 debut, THE SOUL SESSIONS, Joss Stone conveys an incredible degree of musical maturity that goes far beyond her 17 years. Wisely, Stone reunites with many of the same R&B/soul names that helped make her first recording such a success, including Betty Wright, Latimore, and Timmy Thomas. This sophomore Stone disc presents a deep stack of all-original soul songs that finds the Devon, England vocalist and her crew sounding a bit more contemporary. "You Had Me" pairs Stone's powerful voice with a clavinet, a dash of strings, and a funky beat for a track that wouldn't be out of place on a Beyonce record. The down-tempo material also works well, whether it's the call-and response slow jam "Jet Lag" or "Right to Be Wrong," with its Muscle Shoals vibe of crisp guitar licks and laidback organ. The UK native also successfully dabbles in reggae (the loping "Less Is More") and more gospel-flavored fare (the uplifting "Security"), stretching her expressive pipes beyond the emotive R&B that made her famous. With confidence and class, Stone secures her star status on MIND, BODY & SOUL.
