Mind Transplant was an album by Alphonse Mouzon featuirng Tommy Bolin. The strange character that is Alphonse - a jazz fusion drummer who is of Afro-American, French and Blackfoot Indian descent oozes funkiness. I tried to get into this album but having listened to Billy Cobham's Spectrum, I just couldn't help but compare the two and this one came off worst. Whilst Tommy Bolin's guitar work is as good as ever on this album, you feel that he is somewhat more chilled out and therefore there is not so many intricate solos than there are in Cobham's Spectrum album.

The start of most tracks give you the impression the album maybe psychedelic in a Pink Floyd way but it soon appears that the album is more traditionally progressive, generally the songs I suppose are to tell a story. Take the track Golden Rainbows, I don't pick up Golden Rainbows, instead it's more like a detective running around by an ocean. If anything this album is quite similar to Santana, who I've never really been a huge fan of as I never really feel he lets go. In the same way as him, the tracks here continuously build up a pressure through the music which never really releases itself with a burst of craziness, weirdness or amazing solo.

Mind Transplant seems rather caged for me and whilst it has undoubtedly good musicianship and some funkyness, it's not as free-flowing as some of its contemporaries.
