Okay, I am not a Linkin Park fan, in fact I have never really liked them, so when my 13 year old said he wanted the new CD I thought I would buy it and then, for conversations sake, listen to it.....well, it was in my car for the last 3 weeks, and now he finally has it.
I am not sure if Linkin Park are American punk, post punk, mosh rock, or a mixture of all, what I do know is that this is, in my opinion, a very strong album.
The first track, "Wake" - is a bit trancy, quite short and builds up to what one would expect at the end of a rock opera, or a performance artist, trapeze etc, finishing their act, seemed like a bit of a strange opener, but not unpleasant.
"Given Up" - very 'moshy' quite fast, gets the foot tapping if driving, and at home when noone was looking, I did have a bit of a 'fling myself about' moment, like this track a lot.
"Leave Out All The Rest" - Powerful, slower than the previous track, excellent lyrics,
for me has a touch of Blink 182 and nickleback, and staind, almost, though not quite, an anthem, would be good for depressed 13 year olds, lol. "I've never been perfect, but neither have you", very angsty.
"Bleed it out" - Another good rocky number with a fair bit of rapping, reminds me very much of Blink 182 and also of older stuff like Beastie Boys, really, it does.
"Shadow Of The Day" - Again, a bit 'angsty', some great lines "sometimes delusions arn't so simple, sometimes goodbye's the only way", if you were not depressed before hearing this, you will be afterwards. The thing I really like about this track is the 'maturity' of the way the music builds, very, very much like early U2, I like this track a lot, really gets in your head.
"What I've done" - Good guitar riffs, quite samey to some of the other tracks though, in my view, not the strongest track, but still not weak enough to be called a 'filler.
"Hands Held High" - Slow start, use of organ and 'military' type drums and then some rapping which would not be out of place on a Tupac album. Very political, strong, anti-Bush, with some interesting lyrics and musical juxtapositions, quite possibly the strongest track on the whole CD in my opinion, something along the same lines as 'Mosh' by Eminem, yet somehow stronger and more 'grown up', I keep listening to this track, it really is very good, in fact I have just put it on again whilst I am writing this.
"No More Sorrow" - From the beginning drums and haunting guitar riffs you just know this is going to build into an all out punky, moshy, headbanging fiesta, and it does, not my favourite, but nonetheless a good, loud, fun track.
"Valentine's Day" - Melancholy?, romantic?, not sure about this track at all, it seems a bit 'contrived' like any lyric that 'should' be in it is, 'black winter', please!!
"In Between" - Quite touching and slow, feels like the singer is really adressing the listener. The vocalist (Mike Shinoda) has a really individual voice, and I personally think that he should sing more 'slowed' songs like this. This is a strong song and I would have bought this as a single if I had needed to.
"In Pieces" - I do not like this song, it keeps 'teasing' that is going to get going and launch into a huge song and it doesn't, in fact I thing it is the weakest link on this CD.
"The Little Things Give You Away" - At 6minutes 24 seconds, this is the longest, and last track on the CD. I feel like I am at a Fleetwood Mac concert when i lsten to this, no bad thing, but so unlike the rest of the CD, though in fairness, it does wrap up the CD in the same way/style as it started.
So, did I like it?, yes. Would I have bought it if my 13 year old didn't want it?, I really don't know, but am glad I did.
Reading the CD booklet I am struck by the lyrics, which are really pretty good throughout, i am reminded of lyrics by The Levellers, though the style of music is somewhat different. I guess this is probably what makes the CD good and bad for me, many of the songs remind me of other artists which means there is a lot I can like about them, and yet, apart from "Hands held high", I feel like Iv'e heard it all before.
So for me, it is a really sound and competent album, no complaints, and yet.............it is one of those CD's that I might forget about after a few months and then when I play it gain go 'Oh yea, I like this'.
