Okay folks, just to show how varied my musical tastes are, I came across this CD whilst transferring all my CD's to itunes (work in progress). I had all but forgotton about it, and now I've been playing it for a good few days, almost without stopping, not every track, but certainly a few. For ... Read review

solo project was guaranteed. No one, however, was prepared for the massive response to Lauryn Hill's debut album. Apart from the chart-topping singles "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "Everything Is Everything", the album includes collaborations with D'Angelo, Carlos Santana and soul diva Mary J Blige. Her unique blend of Motown vocals and hip hop proved remarkably addictive, and the tracks are sweetly interspersed with classroom conversations on love. From the autobiographical and emotional lyrics of her own tracks to the stunning reinterpretations of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" and "Tell Him I Love Him" (a secret bonus track), Lauryn points to a new melodic direction in hip hop. An album reminiscent of the classic soul records of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill deserved every one of its Grammies. --Ed Potton

Everything Is Everything was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Lauryn Hill is far from miseducated, as her solo debut album proves. With both critical and popular acclaim from her affiliation with the Fugees, Lauryn uses THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL to make a definitive individual statement. The focus here is love: love of self, love of her son, the love of her life, love of hip-hop. Her powerful lyrics and vocal talent put her in a class by herself. One of hip-hop's more strong-willed artists, Lauryn's positivity defies the '90s materialistic rap scene. Although there is much more singing than rapping, Lauryn still covers plenty of hip-hop ground on THE MISEDUCATION, and her music falls into the rap category just as much as it does into R&B. Produced by Hill herself, this album gives us only a few guest artists (D'Angelo, Mary J.) but lots of Lauryn Hill.[Reviews]Rolling Stone (10/31/02, p.136) - Ranked # 32 in Rolling Stone's Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums - ...[The album] unites hip-hop, R&B and reggae under a single groove...Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.79) - Included in Rolling Stone's Essential Recordings of the 90's.Q (10/01, p.68) - Ranked #25 in Q's Best 50 Albums of Q's LifetimeSpin (9/99, p.132) - Ranked #28 in Spin Magazine's 90 Greatest Albums of the '90s.Q (12/99, p.100) - Included in Q Magazine's 90 Best Albums Of The 1990s.Entertainment Weekly (Spring 2000, p.166) - Ranked #2 in EW's Top 10 albums of the '90sSpin (1/99, p.91) - Ranked #1 on Spin's list of Top 20 Albums of '98.The Source (9/98, p.230) - ...Thoughtful, passionate, purposeful and unmistakably female....Small complaints, not even worth sweating when the overall emotional and musical effect is potent...Rap Pages (11/98, p.130) - 4 (out of 5) - ...Choosing to display all of her talent, songwriting ability, Lauryn pushes rap aside, opting to sing more....Lauryn's attempt to intellectualize pain and love in word without sacrificing emotion in song is daring and creative...Rolling Stone (9/3/98, p.98) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - ...The sound of a woman who takes herself seriously....It's an album...that you could play at a family reunion, or any sort of multigenerational party, and get everyone bouncing and singing along, without anyone ever having to cringe...Spin (9/98, pp.179-180) - 9 (out of 10) - ...the confidence with which Hill sings and raps herself into black music's mammoth tradition...is balanced by the vulnerability of one of MISEDUCATION's two themes: a love gone wrong, untangling itself painfully and slow....Part of her greatness is that this genre-bender h

...7/10.
Track 14. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
And now to a jazzy backing and vocal, with a soulful blend, an 'old record' scratchy sound deliberately included, kinda works. Very diva like vocals, great piano, showcase of her voice, love it. 9/10.
Bonus track (14.) Can't take my eyes off of you.
To a very Fugees' hip hop beat, really works, takes a cheesy classic and makes it modern and funky, some great vocals, yet again. Another massive foot ... ...period. 9/10.
Bonus track (15). Sweetest thing.
Clearly time in the studio, or trying to sound like it. Very soulful, very 'nice' almost sung like a prayer. Sounds a bit like Aretha Franklin, but smoother. 8/10
Overall, the thing I like most about this album is the 'cleverness' of it all. It does not stick to Soul, or R&B, or hip hop, or rap, or funk; it has a bit of everything. Musically and vocally, probably one of the best and strongest 10 ...

...not buy the CD 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' until two years after its 1998 release. Oh yes, I am one of those old fashioned people who won't part with her cash for an album until she's been convinced by the single releases - well what do you expect from someone who remembers vinyl? The bad news for those around me is that the CD comes with full lyrics...tonight Matthew I am going to be Lauryn Hill...BizzyBek can clear a room with this intro! ... ...Track 14 - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, don't worry, the CDs not broken its recorded to sound like an old fashioned vinyl record with a dust needle! A beautiful, slow piece which reminds me of the great female Blues singers of the last century with a sparkling piano accompaniment. Can't Take My Eyes Off You' is a resounding and singalong rendition of this holiday hotel foyer classic. Track 16 - NB Another treat not listed on the CD cover which ...

The Best Review ofMiseducation Of Lauryn Hill, The - Lauryn Hillby

Advantages: everything Disadvantages: none
...but about her album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". This record was out on 1998 and I bought it straightaway. I liked her in the Fugees but I find that on her own she's much better. The cd's cover is quite original. The front is a school desk with a pencil, as if you were going to write something leaning on the cd. The album has 16 songs. I can't find one I don't like, they are all fantastic. Each song has a different message: love, self-esteem, ... ...good bass rythm.
14. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill: This one gives the title to the album. It's recorded so it sounds like an old disc. This one tells you that she found strength inside herself, she decided to follow her own path. It is slow, with a piano and some string instruments.
"But deep in my heart, the answer it was in me
And I made up my mind to define my own destiny."
15. Can't take my eyes off of you: I adore this remake! You will ...

amazingly talented woman Review ofMiseducation Of Lauryn Hill, The - Lauryn Hillby
natachawithoft
This honestly is a fantastic album. The woman really can sing and she's put her heart and soul into this. She's got a beautiful, powerful voice and because she's written the songs herself they really come alive. I can't imagine anyone not liking this album, it's got everything. It's more gentle than her earlier stuff with the fugees and really easy to listen to. But if you do like it i would recommend that you listen to her early fugees stuff too, ... ...and more "tough" but there are songs on the THE SCORE that are just as beautiful as those on her solo album. Killing me softly for example has got just as much magic and there's also a lot more humour on the score. LAST OF ALL, have you heard the beautiful duet she's done with santana on his latest album called put your lights down low. it's lovely. take a listen. ...

One to keep Review ofMiseducation Of Lauryn Hill, The - Lauryn Hillby

Advantages: - Disadvantages: -
I have always been a big fan of Lauryn Hill and when this album came out I had to buy it. She has a terrific voice and her songs but as a solo artists and with the ‘Fugees’ were excellent. It was with the Fugees that she made her song, ‘Killing me Softly’ was excellent and it was going to be her platform for her future success. The Miss Education of Lauryn Hill is very good, some excellent tracks and the reggae tune once famous ... ...that song ‘Doo Wop (That Thing) which was a big hit and it’s track 5 on the album really gets you in the mood. Upbeat and excellent to listen to. It’s catchy and that’s why I think it’s enjoyable. My friend loves the song ‘Ex-factor’ nothing to do with Max factor it’s different more slow and something more softer. A good song nevertheless. The album is mainly Hip Hop and Reggae if you like her singles ...
