Album Notes: In MISS METEORES, Olivia Ruiz's third album, the young French songwriter seems more in control than ever of her artistic persona, and clearly cherishing every bit of her liberation from the shadow of her STAR ACADEMY fame. For starters, she wrote all the lyrics for her new album, as well as co-writing most of the music with longtime partner Mathias Malzieu. Ruiz enthusiastically tries her hand at everything in MISS METEORES, verging from French chanson to hard rock, or from blues to calypso and folk, as well as singing in three languages and featuring several guests from all across the board: Austrian folk outfit Lonely Drifter Karen, rapper Toan, French rock group Coming Soon, Christian Olivier from T tes Raides, the Noisettes, and even members of her own family. For all of this diversity, the songs share a certain similarity--they are all around three minutes long, and most boast a fairly traditional structure of verse/chorus. A very keen interest in sonic texture is what separates this material from similar pop endeavors (including previous Ruiz albums), one that seems to take most of its cues from the musical universe of Tom Waits or Vinicio Capossela. Indeed, regardless of musical genre, the instrumentation remains similar with a penchant for a drunken carnival feel, full of twinkling pianos, staccato patterns, horns, and all sorts of oscillating percussion and other noises, such as the screeching door sounds in the Tim Burton-esque lullaby "Peur du Noir." It may not succeed at every turn, but MISS METEORES certainly witnesses Ruiz growing by leaps and bounds, aided by first-rate production and arrangements.
Advantages: Appealing character, lovely illustrations Disadvantages: Expensive, possible typo?
...Olivia is a book that was given to one of our daughters by her nursery at the end of last term. It quickly established itself as a favourite over the summer holidays.
Olivia is a small pig with large ears. She is lively, energetic, precocious, opinionated and feisty. She specialises in tiring people out ? even herself! In many ways, she reminds me of our two girls?.
This book doesn?t really have a storyline as such; it?s more of a ?Day in the life of??
Olivia likes to try on ALL her clothes when deciding what to wear in the morning. She likes to build very impressive sandcastles but she doesn?t like to nap. She?s partial to Degas and his paintings of ballerinas, but she?s pretty disparaging about Modern Art. She gets sent to the stairs for a ?think? when she?s naughty and demands LOTS of bedtime...

...The first grumpy free break for some years, he was rock bothering in Italy (environmental stuff) so where could we go? After debating and a bottle of wine we decided to try Prague and checked on the Best Western site to see what delights and bargains they had to offer.
For those of you that read my reviews you will notice that we tend to use B.W a lot and there is good reason for doing so. Firstly they are all different, some quirky, some modern, big and small and secondly I can book them all through central reservations, I can easily change hotels, nights and add rooms etc, nothing seems too much trouble.
Where did I choose?
The Best Western Meteor Plaza and what a good choice it turned out to be. At the time of booking they had a two for three night offer bringing the price for 3 nights B&B in total £150.00, bargain...

Advantages: Great programme, very informative Disadvantages: None
...The Meteor, The Ultimare Profile, is a very well produced programme.
It tells the full story of how the Gloster Meteor came about and how it was created.
The Gloster Meteor was proposed in the summer of 1940 and it was the very first jet aircraft that was flown by the Allied air forces during World War 2.
Surprising though this might seem, this video was the first video to be made about this extremely important military aircraft. It follows the story of the Gloster Meteor from the very first days on the drawing board (literally, in this instance) through testing and through to the first test flights and the years of service with the RAF as a front line fighter plane.
The creation of this video led to an important discovery, some extensive colour footage of Sir Frank Writtle, Britain's very own pioneer of jet planes...
