Pryce. In the midst of Boubil and Schönberg's "girl-meets-boy-with confused-emotions-in-Vietnam" rewrite of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Pryce's Engineer's bright tenor provides a nasty yet humanely pragmatical focal point for more logically tuned minds. Daring to tackle the controversial theme of doomed lovers during the misguided American war efforts, Miss Saigon was a thematic and stylistic breakthrough of the 1980s, just like Jesus Christ Superstar had been in the previous decade. But the lyricist, Richard Maltby, previously a young man with alleged off-off-Broadway street cred, could only do so much with Boubil's French original platitudes--it is Schönberg's music paired with producer Cameron Macintosh's storyboard vision that secured the deserved success of Miss Saigon. On this complete recording, an orchestra on form shows off William D. Brohn's skilful orchestrations, and a fine ensemble supports Lea Salonga's tender yet determined Kim. And in the male camp, apart from the prancing Pryce, Peter Polycarpou (John) is crystal clear as the struggling American marine soldier, curbing all tendencies to over-emotionality. --Yngvil V.G.

Advantages: great voices can imagine being there Disadvantages: some songs are cut short
anger. The voice of Johnathan Pryce adds to the humorus element of his character 'The Engineer'. It is a double cd and has all of the songs some of which are cut short for the cd. The cover has the originalMissSaigon logo. I just love the artwork on this the way the helicopter is against the sunset and a bit of it portrays a woman's face. I would reccomend this to anyone who likes musicals and powerful storylines that are not always with happy endings. ...
Advantages: An excellent show, high quality throughout Disadvantages: No helicopter!
evening, we got to meet some of the cast afterwards. Everyone was very friendly (especially Christine Sambeli-Marquez, Ravy Soc Alfonso and Edward Briones), but the highlight of our evening was meeting Ramin Karimloo (Chris). He was gorgeous, charming and happy to chat to us - a real gentleman.

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Miss Saigon
Advantages: A Musical for everyone. Disadvantages: This is the orignial recording.
It would be impossible to do a review on this album without an introduction to the musical itself. The first performance of ?MissSaigon? opened at the Drury lane theatre in London in 1989 and continued with cast changes up until 1999. Seen by 21 million people in twelve different counties, it is still as popular as ever, ranking third in the most popular musicals after ?Cats? and ?Les Miserables?.
Cameron Mackintosh brought the performance to life as he also did with ?Les Miserables?. Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boubil wrote the musical and lyrics.
I was fortunate to see the musical in 1990 when the entire originalcast were still appearing in the show. I have seen it twice since but nothing compares to my first experience, I left the theatre clutching my sweatshirt and the LP dazzled by the show and in much need ...
