...'The Final Cut' or 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' sucked the biggest.
The debate isn't a pointless one, as both albums represent polar opposites of the band's output. 'The Final Cut' was the final album to be produced under the totalitarian thumb of Roger Waters, whose creative control had been progressively spiralling out of control since 1977's 'Animals.' Bearing the unflattering subtitle 'A requiem for the post-war dream by Roger Waters, performed ... ...effectively becoming Pink Floyd's 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason,' with one major difference: Gilmour was expected to tailor his songs to sound like Pink Floyd. Or, as the irritable Waters later put it, 'a pretty fair forgery, or a good copy' of the distinctive Pink Floyd sound.
A Momentary Lapse of Reason was the first Pink Floyd album for five years, and as such was inevitably destined to be a hit, whether it was critically well-received or not ...

Advantages: It's the FLOYD!!! Disadvantages: It's not their best...
...fairly recent purchase of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, an album I only previously owned on cassette.
This album was released in 1987, when the group consisted of David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright - so not only post Syd, but also post Roger Waters. The CD lasts just over fifty-one minutes and has ten tracks on it, the longest being eight minutes forty-five seconds. Pink Floyd are not known for their brevity! If it needs saying, they will ... ...good for them!
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a good album, but it pales against their greats - not only The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, but in my opinion, it is also inferior to Wish You Were Here, The Final Cut and Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Whereas many of their albums affect you with every track, Momentary Lapse (for short!) can pass you by somewhat and is ideal for relaxing to or to play in the background.
This is epitomized in the opening ...

Yes Indeed It Was Review ofMomentary Lapse Of Reason, A - Pink Floydby
pink
Advantages: The odd good track and guitar Disadvantages: Average, very average.. not very Pink Floyd
...no time at all, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason." It’s talking about sex by the way! Down the hole we fall! Come on David that’s just awful! From Roger Waters’ divinely constructed songs that shaped 70s Floyd we come to this! It’s so bad it makes me start looking back at songs that Gilmour held joint credits for with Roger and makes me just wonder if perhaps it was indeed Roger who was writing them with minimal Gilmour input. And this is a major issue ... ...average album. ‘A Momentary Lapse Of Reason’ I believe is very aptly named, it was just that! And had Roger Waters not considered Pink Floyd to be finished you wonder whether Gilmour would ever have pushed this album forward. But it sold like hotcakes, and they got a massive grossing tour out of it. That is something often thrown at Roger, the journalists say "HA so you thought Pink Floyd was finished, you left and then they went and made millions!" ...

Yet another classic Review ofMomentary Lapse Of Reason, A - Pink Floydby
Handonheart
Advantages: A superbly produced album Disadvantages: A bit depressing in places
My first exposure to Pink Floyd was 'Another brick in the wall' when it was originally in the charts. I can still remember singing 'we don't need no education' when I was school and it felt kind of rebelious at the time. I didn't actually think that much of the song at the time but it must have had some impact on me as a child. My second introduction to Pink Floyd was the 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' album, which I heard much later when I was about ... ...a change of musical preferences at the time - from rap, house and hip hop into more laid back blues, jazz and heavy metal stuff. I also have a huge liking for synthesized music such as Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre as well as all things ambient and fluffy!
So I listened to this album with an open mind and a new outlook on music and at first I liked it. Then I listened again and liked it even more and from then on each time I heard ...

modern Floyd Review ofMomentary Lapse Of Reason, A - Pink Floydby
garethd
Advantages: Disadvantages: One or two poor song
A much under-rated Pink Floyd album. The eighties are not seen as classic Floyd territory, but although this record shows signs of a band pulling itself together after the acrimonious loss of its driving force, it still has some cracking songs. Those who doubt Dave Gilmour's singing ability need only listen to "On The Turning Away" to be converted. From a great start, the album loses its way a little towards the end, but pulls it back with the thumping ...
