Post Automatic euphoria where REM had really arrived as megastars, Monster is viewed as an also ran by many. It is more of a rock album, verging towards punk and this was always how REM marketed it, as rough and crude, although New Adventures in Hifi was to surpass its roughness. With some very good singles taken from it, including Strange Currencies, Bang and Blame and What's the Frequency Kenneth, this has a lot of very strong songs, and is a far more upbeat album than Automatic.
One for the collection, but comparisons with Automatic should be avoided, they are two very different albums.
