Advantages: Eno's first musical high Disadvantages: One bad track
is like being clouted after the subdued magnificence of On Some Faraway Beach. But of course this is the point. Eno is screaming ?Wake up and listen.? He is thrusting us back into the musical fray and once again we?re doing battle with the music (in an entirely good way, we?re being forced to interact with the song and the album as a whole). Regardless, BlankFrank is just a gorgeously tense piece of music that thought not quite on par with Baby?s on Fire (but what is?) it is truly desperate. Eno?s vocals by the end make some of Bowie?s hysterical shrieking on Heroes and Look Back in Anger seem like gentle melodic balladry. I probably forget this track morethan I should and so here I say: Greatgreatgreatgreat.
Once again we?re into witty territory for Dead Finks Don?t Talk. The lyrics and music are both refined and hilarious ...
Advantages: calming, gentle, ideal for chilling out Disadvantages: none
One of the first albums to fully utilise the extended length of the cd, this 1985 offering from BrianEno will delight fans of his ambient work and probably irritate those who find this side of Eno's work rather twee.
61 minutes in length this is one piece of gradually evolving music that occupies a space in the room, but doesn't dominate, drifting gently but insistently in the background. However, in keeping with most of Eno's ambient music, this not merely aural wallpaper and there is enough happening in the gently changing patterns of piano trills and synth custers to repay active listening too.
I find it very beautiful, calming, relaxing and ideal for quiet reading or thinking. At times I've used Thursday Afternoon as music to fall asleep to.
It 's a lovely album and can usually be found a fairly bargain prices. Well worth ...
Advantages: gorgeous little vignettes of music, all with their own character Disadvantages: only that some of pieces are too short
This collection of Eno tracks was recorded between 1975 and 1978 and first issued in 1978. The pieces were intended for films - hence, obviously, the title - and many have been used as such over the years.
There is something very appealing about nearly all of these pieces; most are very short, vignettes of sound, with evocative titles such as "Events In Dense Fog" or "Strange Light" or "Final Sunset".
All are recorded on analogue machinery - not a digital sequencer in sight - and it is this that I believe imbues the music with a certain character that you just don't get these days. The sheer act of physically moving tape, altering guitar and piano sounds with analogue synths gives these pieces a vitality and immediacy that remains with the listener for ever.
Despite being a collection of fairly random tracks there was a lot ...

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, acoustic & electric pianos, organ, synthesizer, bass, bells, percussion, various instruments); Paul Rudolph (guitar, bass, snare drum); Robert Fripp, Phil Manzanera (guitar); Brian Turrington (piano, bass); Robert Wyatt (piano, percussion); Rod Melvin (piano); Andy MacKay (keyboards); Busta Cherry Jones (bass); Percy Jones (fretless bass); Rhett Davies (Stick, agong-gong); Dave Mattacks, Phil Collins (drums); Simon King (percussion); The Simplistics (background vocals). This compilation was released on vinyl and tape as MORE BLANK THAN FRANK in 1986 and belatedly issued on CD in 1989 with a less enigmatic title more in keeping with Eno's stated intention: "Instead of trying to compile a representative sample, an historical archive, or a best-of, I just put together a record I'd like to listen to." DESERT ISLAND SELECTION favors Eno's later pop work. Seven songs--including the swirling "St. Elmo's Fire" and the kinetic, African-influenced "King's Lead Hat"--come from ANOTHER GREEN WORLD and BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE, with only two from the concept album TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY) and one, the incandescent "On Some Faraway Beach," from his solo debut HERE COME THE WARM JETS. While all four of Eno's '70s art-pop albums are essential listening, DESERT ISLAND SELECTION is a thoughtful condensation that's both an excellent introduction to Eno's pop work and a wonderfully listenable album itself.
