Advantages: Lovely surroundings and great food Disadvantages: The location of the toilets
I think that you could eat out for a year in Lancaster and be able to find somewhere new to eat everyday. One place that you must not miss out on if visiting the city is the wonderful little pub that has recently changed it's name from The Merchants to Merchants 1668.
Built in 1688 ( hence the name!!) the building was originally used as a wine cellar for Lancaster Castle and is part of the same building as the tourist information office. This tiny little pub is in Market Street just a stone throw away from the railway station in the road to the Castle and Priory. Set in Castle Hill opposite the main post office in Lancaster it is lovely little pub full of character and old world charm.
Recently taken over by new management the Merchant offers an incredible menu of locally produced food - and fits into the Gastropub bracket ...
Advantages: It's Natalie Merchant Disadvantages: None come to mind
As with the recorded work and live performances with her former band “10,000 Maniacs”, NatalieMerchant is the boss, on this her first solo venture since leaving said band, not only is she the main writer of the lyrics but she has written all the music as well, she also plays the piano, organ, and vibraphone.
The album itself was recorded between the months of December 1994 and March 1995 for the quality of the songs and musicianship quite a formidable task.
As this set of songs opens with the track “San Andreas Fault” with the tones of Ms Merchant’s voice heard to introduce the albums start, the material has a familiar feel to it, but to this is to be expected if you own of her former bands albums.
Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with this, this feeling of I’ve heard this ...
Advantages: Lots of history Disadvantages: Admission charges
I have been to York many times but prior to my most recent visit I had never been to The Merchant Adventurers Hall. I had seen the signs for it but I was never too sure what it was and since its tucked away out of sight from the main thoroughfares it's a place I always forget to check out. A friend recently told me that this is a 14th century timber framed building that is the largest building of its type and age in Britain so I figured that this time around I ought to check it out.
Built as a medieval guildhall in 1368 this is probably the oldest surviving building in York, although in an historical city like York there are several other places that also stake this claim. It is not to be confused with the nearby Merchant Taylor's Hall, which was a mistake that I initially made.
The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is tucked away down ...

Producers: T-Bone Burnett, Natalie Merchant. Recorded at Allaire Studios, Shokan, New York; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California; Clinton Studios, New York, New York between June 15 & September 9, 2001. In the post-Lilith Fair solo career of former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant, MOTHERLAND stands as something of an achievement. It melds the lyrical craft she began developing all those years ago with the Maniacs, the contemporary pop sensibilities she's been crafting since the beginning of her solo work, and a variety of new influences that seem to have seeped in somewhere along the way. Things kick off distinctively with the creepy, violin-colored reggae slow-burner "This House is on Fire." From there it's off to an eclectic mix-and-match of styles, including the folk-ballad feel of the title track, the sultry blues of "Put the Law on You," and the gospel-soul tinge of "Build a Levee" (where Merchant is aided by considerable pipes of Mavis Staples. Even as MOTHERLAND traverses a variety of genres, the distinctive approach Merchant applies to the songwriting, performance, and arrangements makes this both one of her most memorable and most consistent solo albums.
