A friend of mine made me listen to a few of the All American Rejects songs, and it sparked an instant interest in me to hear more.
Then I heard 'Dirty Little Secret' on TV, accompanied by the great video, and that was it - they had ANOTHER fan!!!
So I bought the 'Move Along' album and I am awestruck at how I haven't been into them until now - I mean - HAVE I BEEN UNDER A ROCK???
Anyway, here is my track by track guide to the album, with my personal highs and lows...
TRACK 1: DIRTY LITTLE SECRET Wow! What an amazing opening track, and introduction to anyone who hasn't heard their music. The striking of the first chord, and that riff is incredibly addictive, and the rest of the song also just, simple, rocks. 9/10
TRACK 2: STAB MY BACK This is another great song, the verses are a little bit weak, IMO, but the chorus is memorable and its pleasant to the ear. A little bit more acoustic than the opening track, and it works well. 6/10
TRACK
3: MOVE ALONG Well, well, well - AMAZING ALERT!!! This is such a brilliant song!! It is an ANTHEMIC tune, and the chorus is just brilliant. This has to be my favourite track by them, and honestly, it is just great. The quiet, intro build up, then this burst into rocky pop BRILLIANCE. 10/10!!
TRACK 4: IT ENDS TONIGHT Now, this for me is a low point in the album. Here they try and lower the tempo and do a rock/punk ballad song, and I don't know why, but I'm not that keen. Don't get me wrong its a good song, but I fail to see why it is being given a single release. Hmm 5/10
TRACK 5: CHANGE YOUR MIND The pace is raised once again for another catchy chorus. This sounds a bit similar to one or two other songs ('Stab My Back' being one of them), but still works none the less. 6/10
TRACK 6: NIGHT DRIVE This is a good song - not brilliant, but good. It sees them experimenting with a few different beats to add originality to the song, and it does work well - after you get over the initial difference in style. But still a good upbeat song.
TRACK 7: 11:11PM I really like this song, its yet another upbeat song, with a catchy chorus, and some good lyrics. I have yet to hear a song that has a clock countdown in it that I don't like (thinks back to '24' by Jem - amazing). 7/10
TRACK 8: DANCE INSIDE Another one of my highlights on the album, its a bit lower tempo than most of their songs, but I had this on in the car the other day and its a great driving song. The chorus is very good, as is the case with most of their songs, and overall, its a very good song. 8/10
TRACK 9: TOP OF THE WORLD One of my FAVOURITE songs on here, this is such a catchy song - uplifting, good beat, great guitars - another personal highlight for me. 9/10
TRACK 10: STRAIGHTJACKET FEELING Hmm - I am pretty indifferent to this track. Its a ballady track, and it is very nice, but the vocals seem a little bit to whiney for this, and a tad, dare I say it, annoying. May be to do with the tracks production though. 6/10
TRACK 11: I'M WAITING This is OK, and OK only, its a bit too similar to some other songs of theirs on this album, but, its still hard to criticise. Overall, i give it a 6/10
TRACK 12: CAN'T TAKE IT I must say - I have been critical about the attempts at the ballads on this album, but this one makes up for all of them!. This see's the AAR heading in a different direction, as there is no guitar in sight, and only strings as the main accompaniment . Some may say this is a haunting song, and I can see where that presumption comes from, but one thing is for certain, its a very, very good song. 10/10
TRACK 13: NIGHT DRIVE (ACOUSTIC) A refreshing change - they down the tempo and provbide us with an acoustic, stripped down version of a previous track on the album. In comparison, the original is better, but thats probably because I'm not used to this. I don't think this is the best song to repeat again, an acoustic of 'Move Along' would of been immensely fantastic. 7/10
TRACK 14: EYELASH WISHES This song isn't too bad, it rounds the album off nicely, with an up tempo feel, and a catchy chorus (yet again). Not ahighlight, but not a low point either - 7/10
Overall, I really like this album. As always there are a few dudd tracks, but that happens in nearly all cases.
I would highly recommend this album to anyone, and also think that the ALL AMERICAN REJECTS SHOULD RELEASE MOVE ALONG IN THE UK!!!!
