After a number of singles and extensive touring around Europe, New Order finally issued their first album, Movement, in November 1981. It was long awaited and the hero worship that had got quite out of proportion following the death of Ian Curtis in 1980 made expectations the highest for new material. Nothing would have been able to live up to the weight of such expectation.

Movement received lukewarm reviews and very strong sales, powered by the mass adulation that still gripped the rock public. Its sonorous melodies and languorous rhythms were more of a glance back at Joy Division than a bold step forward, and the album did little to expand their audience. It was not until April 1982 that the group managed to develop the brighter rhythmic base of Everything’s Gone Green into the dance gem Temptation.

It’s a disposable piece of work, neither one thing nor the other and was a disappointment for the masses of fans who bought it.
