Mozart: Horn Concertos -
It's tempting to say "this is a justly legendary disc, made when the gods seemed to be

smiling upon all concerned. Go and buy it". However, that would be shirking the more analytical aspects of a reviewer's duties. So why should you buy it? Mozart's horn concertos are the first great essays in the medium, and even within the four you can trace a clear development in terms of sophistication and technical difficulty. And who better to present these works than one of the undisputed greats of the instrument, Dennis Brain, whose career was so tragically cut short in a car crash when he was just 36? The coupling is the fine Quintet for piano and wind with Dennis joined by his oboist-brother, Leonard. Although these recordings were made in 1954, they have been excellently cleaned up by EMI for this release which plays heavily on their nostalgia value, with a reproduction of the original LP sleeve and black disc on the cover of the CD. The concertos became a bestseller when they were first released and in the intervening years they've lost none of their lustre. --Harriet Smith

Advantages: a new take on a familiar warhorse Disadvantages: is it worth full price?
...It's unlikely that any music lover who has a good recording of Beethoven's violin concerto on CD (say: Perlman, Grumiaux or Szigeti) would ever say to him or herself: 'boy, I wonder what that sounds like on the clarinet'. In fact, the only people who might would be clarinetists, for they tend to feel (mistakenly, as it happens)that there just isn't enough original repertoire written for their instrument. So here, spanking new, is a Deutsche Grammophon CD offering us an original work in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and an arrangement of the Beethoven prepared by Russian pianist/conductor Mikhail Pletnev. The soloist is Michael Collins, who plays the familiar Mozart on his basset horn with all the joy and panache we expect. The Beethoven is a different cup of tea. It's difficult to listen to the famous melodies without hearing the fiddle (or...

Advantages: Everything you could ever want from a classical CD Disadvantages: none
...I have purchased and listened to many types of music and as a classical pianist always like to explore new CD's. This album has so many classics on it and is delightful to listen to.
Did you know that opening music in 2001 - A Space Odyssey was from Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss or that the background music in the British Airways TV commercial was the Flower Duet from the opera Lakme?
This compilation album is perfect whether you are a lover of classical music or just interested to find out what it is all about.
The track listing shows what can be expected on this wonderful CD.
