Mozart: Don Giovanni -
Recorded live at the 1956 Salzburg Festival, this is one of the great Don Giovannis on ... more
disc. Why? Look at the cast list--the top Mozartians of the 1950s in their prime. Cesare Siepi was THE Don of his generation, a carefree rake with a glorious bass voice. Fernando Corena, for all his stage mugging, was made for Leporello. Elisabeth Grummer's powerful Donna Anna reminds us of her shameful neglect by recording companies. Lisa Della Casa's Elvira is beautifully sung and characterized. Leopold Simoneau was the best lyric tenor of the era; his sweet-voiced Ottavio is unforgettable. But the real hero is Dimitri Mitropoulos, who leads a performance of great intensity, yet never breaks the classic frame. --Dan Davis

Dirty Don in quite a new guise: the ominous opening bass notes are cut short, the tempo is astonishingly quick, there are surprising sudden sforzandi (sudden sharp attacks), and everything feels urgent and breathless. Some people find the young conductor Daniel Harding too mannered, too eager to make a statement, but his unflagging energy and musical inventiveness can be absolutely captivating. Everything is it at the service of the drama, of communicating the emotions and the plot in the most effective manner possible. Just occasionally one wishes for him to linger a little longer over a phrase or dwell on an emotional statement, but the flip side of his speedy tempi is that the dramatic tension never lets up. The gifted young singers all palpably communicate their excitement at being part of this project, and operate with dramatic flair as an ensemble. A highlight? That would have to be Peter Mattei's meltingly erotic rendition of "Deh vieni" which really has to be heard to be believed. --Warwick Thompson
