...by Fritz Wunderlich Personally I don't think Stuart Burrows will ever be beaten with his rendition of this classic aria but Wunderlich would give him a run for his money. A great aria from the soon to be a big screen version of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte! Track11: Cielo e mar! sung by Giuseppe di Stefano This tenor was famous for his wild untamed singing that eventually cost him his voice. Advantages: Kasarova's personal touch. Virtuosic without showing off
Disadvantages: She doesn't keep singing forever

...This CD is a compilation of 10 operatic arias for the mezzo soprano voice. The line up ranges from the Baroque opening number to the Classical Mozart to the late Romantic Bel Canto Donizetti opera numbers. All are gloriously sung by the Bulgarian mezzo Vesselina Kasarova, and beautifully accompanied by maestro Friedrich Haider and the Munich Radio Orchestra/ Chorus of the Bavarian Radio. Vesselina Kasarova is known for her multi-coloured deep and melancholy voice (a very distinctly identifiable one at that!) and her interpretative intensity. Every note that she sings is a part of the story she is telling. Her florid coloratura (virtuoso decoration of the main melodic line) is legendary, and yet they are never gratuitous. This is a dream singer for anyone who likes drama and theatrically involved singing..... and she doesn't compromize... Read review

A great intro to classical music

Advantages: All good strong performances with some absolutely glorious
Disadvantages: Some of the arias do not show the singers at their best

...TRACKLIST AND REVIEW FOR "THE MOST FAMOUS OPERA ARIAS" Rigoletto, opera Caro nome Composed by Giuseppe Verdi Performed by London Philharmonia Orchestra with Anna Moffo Conducted by Sir Colin Davis >This is a dreamy, beautiful performance of this famous aria with Anna Moffo's beautiful soft high notes really capturing the vulnerability and love Gilda feels at this stage of the opera. Arguably the aria is performed a little slow in places but it is one of the best recorded versions. Rigoletto, opera La donna é mobile Composed by Giuseppe Verdi Performed by London Philharmonia Orchestra with Alfredo Kraus Conducted by Julius Rudel >Kraus was a classy tenor with lots of style. Initially you may find his voice a little bit nasal or even worn compared to say Domingo and Pavarotti but Kraus is very good in this opera - so often... Read review

Almaviva and the barber of Seville
Review of Rossini: Il Barbiere di Siviglia (in English) by  MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Fun and lively comic opera sung in English
Disadvantages: Not in the original language

...The Marriage of Figaro. A play already utilised as a basis for earlier operas including The barber of Seville by Paisiello in 1782 and Figaro by Mozart in 1796. The English translation provided by Amanda and Anthony Holden. This recording opens with the famous Overture with slow introduction leading to the main section with the two main themes repeated. The action then begins. The ardent Count Almaviva (Bruce Ford - tenor) has fallen in love with Rosina (Della Jones - contralto), the ward of Doctor Bartolo. Bartolo (Andrew Shore - baritone) however has plans to marry her himself. Almaviva serenades Rosina and sends her love letters under the assumed name of Lindoro. The factotum, Figaro (Alan Opie - baritone), arranges for him to visit Rossini disguised as a drunken soldier. The plan fails and he is arrested and imprisoned. Undeterred, Figaro... Read review
