Mogwai = 5 men
Origin = Scotland
DOB = 1996

Mogwai, a leading runner in the genre of post-rock, formed in 1996. With 4 albums along with various LPS and remixes under their belts, much was anticipated of the 2006 release of Mr. Beast. Mogwai fans has long anticipated this album, many hailing it as the album that would being mogwai to the forefront of the UK music scene.

That album was released nearly a year ago, yet Mogwai are still unheard of in mainstream UK. That does not mean this album isn't for you. This album, is a masterpiece, from start to finish. I'm a big mogwai fan and love their previous work, especially Rock Action and Happy Songs for Happy People, two great albums.

So, to start with, here's an overview of each song on the album:

1. Auto Rock (4.19)
This song is simple yet a great opener. It consists of a simple piano melody being played time and time again. The background has a gentle techno beat with occasional synth noises along with a constant thump of the toms of the drums. This gradually builds up into a movement of excellence and leaves you hanging for the next song.

2. Glasgow Mega Snake (3.34)
This is possibly one of Mogwai's heaviest songs considering its only 3 minutes long. From start to end it is based around guitar riffs yet isnt hard on the ear, with a louder, heavier tone for the chorus. A great song, so popular it will be on the Tony Hawk's Project 8 computer game, one of the most popular games around.

3. Acid Food (3.41)
This song is a complete change. After GMS you wonder how you ended up here. This song is much quieter with nice guitar melodies and electronic drums. This song also introduces the voices of mogwai to this album, the singing is low and smooth but inspiring.

4. Travel Is Dangerous (4.01)
This song could be by many bands, with vocals yet again. However, it is simply mogwai in the pulsating bass lines and rough yet catchy guitars. This song is great, exciting and definatly one to sing along too, which dosen't happen much with Mogwai.

5. Team Handed (3.58)
This song has a traditional mogwai feel, its quiet and calm, yet unlike any of their other albums, its a relatively short song so you aren't hanging on your seat for an explosion, which is quite nice in some respects that this song definatly passes the idle time and would be perfect for dreaming too. I'm sure this will appear in some TV adverts or Movies eventually.

6. Friend of the Night (5.28)
This was the first single from this album. And what a great song it is! Typical mogwai drums start it off, not compromising to the average, more simple beat, giving the song an extra edge. The piano fills this song very well and makes it really easy to listen to yet enjoyable and exciting, a great song. The end builds up, ever increasing in noise yet not losing the simple aspect of this song.

7. Emergency Trap (3.32)
This song is in some respects similar to acid food. It is quiet and relaxing, one of the ones to play when your parents or grandparents are in the car. Half way through the song there is a great change and the piano is beautiful, a really good song.

8. Folk Death 95 (3.38)
This song is again simlar to track 2 and 4, yet epic in every way. Not one of my favourites, but a really good exciting song. I imagine this one would be a good one to drive too.

9. I choose Horses (5.10)
This is a nothing song, not much of a tune and with foreign language speaking throughout. It fills its slot on the album, but you have to be in a more particular mood to listen to it, it'd be nice in bed but first thing in the morning it's a definate skip.

10. We're No Here (5.46)
The final song on the album starts with high feedbacky-guitar noises and is then breached by a smooth guitar section. All of a sudden Mogwai hit you like they used to, an unexpected wave of music that could blow your ears off, exciting and tense that never ceases. It gets more intense as it goes on, entering a scratchy breakdown but never disapointing, quite a way to end an album!

NEVER BOUGHT A MOGWAI ALBUM? This is for you. If you've never experienced 'post rock' this will definatly be a kind introduction, its exciting and allows some room for lyrics in two songs. A great album for anyone new to mogwai.

FOR THE MOGWAI FAN.. Yes, if you're a fan this is a must have. You might not enjoy it as much as some of the other albums, this album has relatively short songs and is more fast moving between songs, yet dosen't lose that mogwai aspect we all love. A good album, nearly as good as Happy Songs.

So, go out and buy this album. Its one of the essenatials, and if you don't like it, I could almost say that you would after a few listens. If you dont like music that dosen't sing or have outstandingly catchy songs like McFly, then i'd advise you to stay clear as this isn't for you. But, if you like something different you'll get into this album pretty soon.
