Soulwax are four guys and one girl from Belgium (Stephen, David, Stephane, Inge and Stefaan), and are not like anything I have heard before.
They came to my attention after they supported Muse, and I went to a Wannadies gig just to see Soulwax supporting them. I was very pleased to hear some of the best songs I have ever heard, performed by very talented musicians, with some great on-stage effects, such as flashing mic-stands.
An incredibly eclectic mix of rockin' guitar riffs, melodic keyboards, powerful bass and awesome vocals, Soulwax are impossible to define. Their 2nd full-length album, "Much Against Everyone's Advice" (only album released in the UK) has brought them successful sales and their live shows have earned a terrific following. This was shown by a packed moshpit for their set at Reading Festival over the summer.
I have been playing the "Much Against Everyone's Advice" album to all my friends and they have all liked it, the favourite tracks tending to be the singles "Too Many DJ's", "Much Against Everyone's Advice" and "Conversation Intercom", although "Saturday" and "Funny" are also popular. The singles have all been regularly played at rock and indie clubs in Hull (albeit on our request a lot of the time) and in general the reaction has been good. Not only do they make amazing music, but also amazing videos - which include those previously mentioned mic stands!
A must-see live act, they put their own twist on songs by people such as Nik Kershaw, Prince, and even the Backstreet Boys (Soulwax's Back, Alright!).
I eagerly await the next album.
