Advantages: The appearance of Sandra Bullock Disadvantages: A waste of a great film Title
MurderBy Numbers is essentially a shop window for Sandra Bullock (she also co-directs) and little else. It is an OK film of the crime / thriller genre, although it doesn't really warrant the title 'thriller'.
I went to see the film knowing nothing about it other than the appearance of Ms. Bullock, that was enough for me, I think she has a superb screen presence, although she does tend towards films which aren't too demanding. Oh, I suppose she's not too bad looking either!!.
Note to self: don't go and see a film if you don't know at least a little about it - check out Ciao first.
Bullock plays a Detective who is also a Crime Scene Investigator, strangely, we are introduced to her (Cassie) before a crime takes place. Her partner (Sam), is played by Ben Chaplin and they enter a rocky on / off relationship which verges ...
Advantages: Good Performances, and exciting twist Disadvantages: Unfresh Approach to film making, throwaway plot
Story
Cassie Mayweather is a detective (and yes you guessed it) an unorthodox one at that. It?s just not as fun if their ordinary and stick to the rules is it? Anyway Cassie and her team of forensic scientists find young women who have been brutally murdered in a wood. Everyone around her thinks it?s a pretty open and shut case, but she?s not convinced, why would the killer leave all the evidence?, why wouldn?t he cover it up better? As Cassie gets more involved in the case, she assigned a new partner Sam Kennedy, who is an ordinary cop who sticks to the rules and doesn?t always approve of Cassie?s strange ways of going about things. Two teenagers, one a cool popular hunk, the other a nerdy forensic evidence fanatic, seem to be planning something up, are they the killers? If so why does all the evidence point to an other party ...
Advantages: Great detail, very engrossing Disadvantages: not enough to moan about
, the killer's profile leads him to a new suspect, but Cassie doesn't believe it. She has a gut feeling that the real murderers are Justin and Richard, and as she closes in on the truth, the bond between the two killers becomes strained. Will she discover the real truth; will someone else get pinned for the crime? The suspense must be killing you.
So Murderby Numbers is a pretty decent thriller, I say pretty decent because unfortunately it does have a couple of flaws. The actual concept of two young men executing the perfect, untraceable murder just too see if they could get away with it, is not a new one. The master of suspense himself, Hitchcock, had a success with the same idea in his film "Rope", but this concept actually draws from a real murder case back in 1924 when two young men Leopold and Loeb were tried for exactly doing this ...
