Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] hypnotic, lush excursion into ambient music that gave birth to a million electronic musicians for whom microvariations in tone are equivalent of guitar solos."
Advantages: Beautiful music for the senses Disadvantages: No comment
...voices and soft piano, this track is slightly darker. It is a seemingly random piece played on the synthesizer that mixes, what sounds like, the harp, cello and female choral voice. This said, it is still strangely hypnotic. It reminds me of some of the music from 'Bladerunner'.
BrianEno was the man who invented the word 'ambient' in musical terms (literally). He has produced several ground-breakng albums and by far and away the best are 'Apollo' and 'Music for Airports'. However, there are a few I haven't listened to yet.
I have programmed into my computer the first track and it is the music I go to sleep to. I like to think my good dreams are helped by listening to Eno, Spiegel im Spiegel, Fripp and a few others.
Some music is an acquired taste, but I don't think this is true of Eno's 'Music for Airports' and the Apollo...

Advantages: Eno's first musical high Disadvantages: One bad track
...Having blathered on about BrianEno’s genius in my Ops for Bowie’s Outside and Earthling (though not in my Op on Fripp’ Exposure and he was in on that too, but not quite so obviously) it seems fitting that I get round to the master himself. That first sentence should give you an indicator as to the high esteem with which I hold Eno. For Eno is an aberration, a musician who is not a musician. When he was allowed into Roxy Music is was because he had a high quality tape recorder, I kid you not. Eno began recording and treated the other band members’ instruments. He was interested in the fusing of music and technology. Eno in many eyes was and is the father of ambientmusic. His later recording: his Ambient series for the now defunct EG records (gobbled by up Virgin which caused an acrimonious fight for cash and music rights...

Advantages: I get to dust off another obscurity from my record collection Disadvantages: You have to read my fevered ramblings
...-in-cheek takes on pop-song conventions from his first two albums. But what most intrigues him and the listener here is the creation of textures in sound. Like pop music's other famous Brian - Mr Wilson - Eno wanted to see how far he could take the idea of the recording studio as a musical instrument.
Impressively, he did so, not with samples and digital technology, but using real musicians. It may be hard to believe, but Phil Collins plays drums on this album. The rhythmic vigour of his contributions are a reminder that Eno, famed for his ambientmusic, is just as keen on rhythms. His recent album with percussionist Peter Schwalm confirmed this.
And yes, most of the tracks on Another Green World are - gulp - instrumental. But wait, wait - it's not as bad as it sounds. None of the tracks outstays its welcome. They are like little gems: some rough...
