Advantages: An enjoyable light read Disadvantages: none!
I have read many books by Jill Mansell and I have to say that I would rate 'Making YourMindUp', which is her latest one, as one of her best. If you are not familiar with Jill Mansell, I think I would say that her novels fall into the category of 'chic lit' although I'm never quite sure exactly what that is! My own definition tends to be light modern fiction.
Well Jill Mansell seems incredibly good at this and all her novels are very accessible and easy to read. I think that one of the most important things that influence whether you enjoy the book are the characters - you have to like them and you have to care what happens to them (and I would say this is the same whether you are reading the greatest classic or the latest chic lit). I definitely liked most of the characters in this book.
The plot also has to be believable ...
Advantages: Easily accessible, thought provoking, well written Disadvantages: Well, if you're not interested in children or education, you probably won't be taken
entering the school system. Although much has changed in the Western schooling system since Donaldson first published this book in 1978, it is clear to the reader that we still have a ways to go, and that this might just explain why we increasingly end up labelling children as academic failures.
Donaldson's style is easily understandable, she uses a minimum of psychological jargon and her arguments are well drawn out and compelling. In addition, she makes her case in just under 150 pages, and the book can be gotten for as little as 99p in used book stores. It would be an equally good read for students, professionals and parents. If you are planning a developmental psych course and this is not compulsary reading, well, maybe you should read it and see if you might just want to tweak your reading list...
