Advantages: Daniel sings Disadvantages: Can't buy in shops
...Even although Silverchair have been very quiet over the past year, their lead singer Daniel Johns has been busy in the studio working on something a bit different. Daniel has recorded 5 tracks with remixer Paul Mac. Daniel’s well known rock sound and Paul’s electronic influences merge together to make a beautifully atmospheric EP which they have called ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Rock’. The first song, ‘Rain’ has more of Daniel’s obvious guitar riffing coming through and ‘Take Her Out’ is the angriest of them all (more akin to Silverchair’s own ‘Spawn Again’). ‘Home’ and ‘Staging A Traffic Jam’ are more unusual – almost relaxing to listen to. But Daniel’s tender vocals can be heard on 4 of the tracks and add...

Advantages: Great songs, vocals, lyrics, music Disadvantages: Some dodgy recording on a tight budget
...was sort of all right until you told me you'd slept with him"
and later:
"I'm still right next door if you need me
I don't think that I'm strong enough to come and tell you
when I'm hurting
But please come and talk to me
Goodbye dear friend, I love you
And that's the hardest part"
What does it sound like? Well, I'm not a great fan of folk rock, so Ican't compare him with others. Fans of the UK underground scene of the early nineties might compare him with "The Levellers" taken down to basics. There are hints of The Pogues, or Aslan. and at times of Irish folk. His eco-friendly lyrics are very though provoking, and overall it is very original. He would seemingly be equally at home playing a Greenpeace rally or Reading Rock.
It's clear that it was recorded on a tight budget; at times the backing vocals are not quite on the right...

Advantages: Wicked dance music! Disadvantages: Songs are a bit long!
...'t get them on any other track. 4/5
Once In A Lifetime ft Da Yenne
This tune starts with a real Oriental opening to it. Then the mellowed beats kick in. This is quite Groove Armada-like. Da Yeene talks more than sings through the chorus's. The chorus isn't a belting one either. Its without doubt a summery tune but Ican't see the single potential in this like I can with a lot of other tracks. It's a bit average in a way… unless it's a grower. 3/5
Show You How ft Julie Morrison & Jay Soul
I don't like the laughy talky start to be honest… and at first it doesn't get much better! Julie Morrison sounds like Lisa Stansfield and the tune is very Brand New heavies and doesn't seem to work. In fact I don't like this tune very much! Makes the last one sound so much better… and oh no rapping, skipping, skipping… NEXT! 2/5
