It should be stated at the outset that no-one should be put off by an arrangement of ... more

Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition which is
"only" for a brass quintet. Stephen Roberts'
superbly crafted transcription, aided by his
insider knowledge (he is the horn player of the
ensemble) is fully convincing. Only "The Great
Gate of Kiev" obviously requires fuller weight
than is available. The same praise can be afforded
to Roberts' arrangement of the overture to
Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla, which leaves no
doubt as to this group's virtuosity, not to
mention sense of fun. Böhme's civilised sextet,
playful but never vulgar, is given a most
committed account, but it is the one-movement
Alabiev quintet that is something of a discovery.
The conversations between the two trumpeters,
Simon Lenton and Angela Whelan are the essence of
chamber music. Alabiev makes sure he doesn't
overstay his welcome, and the still, quiet close
of this work leads perfectly into the purposeful
stride of the opening "Promenade" of Pictures. The
sensitivity and musicality of this ensemble ensure
that this disc will give repeated pleasure.

A collection of Mussorgsky greats

Advantages: A great recording of popular and familiar works with excellent sound and performance values
Disadvantages: Absolutely none whatsoever

GENERAL HISTORY OF COMPOSER

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was born in 1839 to a family of land-owners. In 1856 he joined the army where he met Alexander Borodin and César Cui, who introduced him to Mily Balakirev, the teacher of Cui and the future, self-appointed head of the Mighty Five. He resigned in 1858 to pursue a musical career, but the emancipation of the serfs in 1861 forced Mussorgsky to join the civil service, while continuing ...
...with the Nationalist Russian School of composers of the "Mighty Five" that included Mily Balakirev following Mihail Glinka, the grandfather of Russian national music, as the "leader" of the group. Others were Cesar Cui, Alexander Borodin and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. During this time Mussorgsky developed his own realistic style, abandoning Western Romanticism and forging a daringly original style, very raw and often dissonant. ... more

Modest composes Musical Paintings

Advantages: Contrasting programme music unified by a recurring theme
Disadvantages: None

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, born in 1839, was one of a group of Russian composers known as The Five, who were dedicated to producing a distinctive Russian style of music. Among Mussorgsky’s closest friends was the archietect and painter, Victor Hartmann. Hartmann died suddenly at the age of only 39. Mussorgsky was devasted by the news of his death. The following year of 1874, he attended an exhibition of his friend’s work. Walking around the exhibition, ...
...inspire Mussorgsky to compose an evocative and masterful tribute to his friend and his aristry. Mussorgsky composed Pictures at Exhibtition as a cycle of Piano pieces illustrating ten of Hartmann’s pictures linked by a recurring theme to show the viewer moving from one painting to another. It was later arranged for the orchestra by Maurice Ravel. Ravel wasn’t the first person to attempt arranging the work for orchestra but was undeniably the most ...

A Classical Review

Advantages: A great diversity of famous works
Disadvantages: Not everything is perfect

: Promenade from Pictures at an Exhibition SAINT-SAËNS: Finale from Symphony no.3 in C minor, op.78 "Organ" This collection therefore represent some of the best known pieces of music from the Baroque era to the 20th Century, all predominately orchestral. Most of the recordings are very good, although there are a few rather poor ones as well. The slowing down in the "Ride of the Valkyries" takes much power away from the piece, Beethoven's Fifth is painfully slow and measured instead of being faster and more powerful, the "1812 Overture" lacks punch (with the cannons probably digitally added) and the "Ode to Joy" is nothing but a 30 second snippet. However the choral pieces are mostly fantastic (the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem is nothing short but mind-blowing, as is the Mozart alternative, Holst's "Mars" is one of the best I've heard ...
