Horowitz - Complete DG Recordings in one small box

Advantages: Unparalleled playing, Unbelievably good bargain for 6 CDs!
Disadvantages: Um, paper sleeves? No, seriously, it's great

This box set comprises recordings from 1985-89, when Horowitz was 81 years old! In 1986 Horowitz returned to Russia after 60 years away to give his monumental Moscow recital of which the live recording is included in this set. I personally find this performance of Liszt's Sonetto 104 del Petrarca to be the finest ever recorded. Alongside this is Scarlatti, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Schumann, Chopin, Moszkowski, and Schubert. Accompanying this recital is 5 other discs of outstandingly unique playing. As he got older, Horowitz's playing became a sort of caricature of itself in the nicest possible way. By this I mean, his dynamics became more extreme, he became more expressive than ever, and his sense of style was heightened to new levels. Horowitz's Mozart playing has been criticized for being too free and not in Mozart ...

J. S. Bach Gets Karajan's Grand Treatment

Advantages: J. S. Bach; all musicians and vocalists; Karajan.
Disadvantages: Karajan's big, ponderous sound and historical inauthenticity, for some.

With an eye to leaving an impressive legacy, Austrian-born conductor Herbert von Karajan was wise to adopt the available modern technology early on to record his works for posterity. 'His Legacy For Home Video', as the DVD project was called, gave him complete artistic and technical control over the entire production. Notwithstanding the pomposity of the name, the series from Sony Classical does earn its place in every classical music lover's library for the sheer excellence of the recorded material. One disc that never goes out of favour for this listener is the all-Bach 1984 New Year's Eve Concert (Silvesterkonzert) held at Mr Karajan's stomping grounds, the Berlin Philharmonie, where he directs the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The featured soloist is German violinist and Karajan protegé Anne-Sophie Mutter, who plays ...

Review of Herbert Von Karajan - Bach Violin Concerto No 2 (DVD)

Mutter

Advantages: Few if any weak songs, Unusual, Very catchy
Disadvantages: Some may not class it as 'heavy'

Mutter, Rammstein's third album and one of their best too. Almost all the songs stand up to close scrutiny. Every track is different to the next. Upon listening to Mutter I was instantly hooked to the album. This album thrust Rammstein into the spotlight through its unforgettable track listing... 1. Mein Herz Brennt Starts off slow, but Mein Herz Brennt soon hits the chorus and after that, there is no stopping this wonderful song. The keyboarding is excellent and one of Flake's best performances. Incredibly catchy and easy to sing along to. 5/5 2. Links 2 3 4 Starting with marching, soon commencing to the trademark vocals and drums. Catchy and unstoppable, Links 2 3 4 is almost perfect, Till's vocals are superb as always and the highlight of this song. Though it is slightly repetitive at times, this being the only let down for this ...
