INTRO:
Guten tag! Vait who are you? Intruder, Achtung! Achtung! Halt or I fire, Guards, Schnell! Schnell!
French may be the language of love, and English for providing sports commentary, but there’s no doubt that for sheer dramatics, the German language has it all.
And part of this is what makes RAMMSTEIN so good in what they do, because lets face it they are something special.
The German sextet are not strangers to the music industry, they have been in there for nine years now and know exactly what to do.
They weren’t that well known at first, but it was after their second studio album ‘SEHNSUCHT’ and the single ‘DU HAST’ that people started to recognise them and the gained recognition in the states.
They’re unique blend of heavy grinding riffs and industrial synth- pad noises earned them the award of ‘best international act at many awards, but that was nothing compared to what was coming in 2001!
What’s all this fuss about Rammstein you say? Well let’s have a listen shall we.
MUTTER-Being the 3rd part of Rammsteins anthology:
Rammstein open this album up with the song ‘MEIN HERZ BRENNT’, which I believe means ‘my heart burns’ and it’s a thunderous opening. First off there’s 50 seconds of quiet strings and subdued drumming before Front man Till Lindemann explodes into the chorus ‘MEIN HERTZ BRENNT’. The guitars are heavy and down tuned, there’s a timpani and a synth pad making the dramatics for this opening,
Then there’s a great little guitar solo on the bridge before the storming chorus again, this song really sets you in the right mood, its heavy its emotional, its dramatic!
‘LINKS 2 3 4’ Follows it and immediately shows us how Rammstein love those head banging marching style riffs with a song about, well marching. There are little effects on this song, it’s mostly the down tuned guitar and thumping drum beat that causes you to jump about on this song. A little guitar solo in the middle tops off a great song with a real marching driving riff! This track is also the bands second single off Mutter.
Who hasn’t heard the next song? Ok Bin Laden you can put your hand down now. I say this because everyone must have at some point heard ‘SONNE’ because it was simply one of the most played songs ever on music video stations and is often regarded as their best song ever. It starts off with a count up to 10 and then opens into a great pounding guitar riff that sounds dark and menacing, and sets the tone for the chorus which is an uplifting/epic/melodic piece that has to rank among the best choruses of all time, in English it says:
One, here comes the sun. Two, here comes the sun. Three, she is the brightest star of them all. Four here comes the sun.
Ok it sounds basic lyrically but it’s a stunning piece of music. The bridge is a depressing/dark piece with only strings and drums that’s leads us onto another round of the chorus. You simply have to hear this song, it was the first single and it’s easy to see why, stunning song!
The big question is can it get any better, well yes and no. ‘ICH WILL’ follows Sonne up with another slightly heavier tone, it’s not quite as good as Sonne, but it’s still an excellent song! It features another head banging riff, with some extremely loud drumming and dark menacing vocals that only six Germans could manage, ‘ Ich will’ has a great sound as the chorus rattles in amidst the pounding drums and driving guitar riffs! Ich will is also the 3rd single from the album.
‘FEUER FREI’ continues the heavy sound to the album with a much faster paced chorus and with the lyrics ‘BANG, BANG’ it’s not hard to understand what they are trying to say! It’s the bands 5th and final single and was on the XxX soundtrack, there are great driving guitars and heavy drumming on this track, and in fact it sounds a fair bit like Ich will, excellent heavy song.
Next the title track of the album ‘MUTTER’ takes things down a notch or two, with a more melodic approach. Meaning simply ‘Mother’ the song features some melodic guitars, slow drumming and lots of strings, its an emotional song with lots of character, the guitar solo in the middle is excellent as well and really sets the mood of the song, its about him being inside his Mothers womb still.
‘SPEILHUR’ is the next song and starts off with a monologue that won’t mean much to you if you can’t speak German; it soon breaks off into a typical Rammstein heavy driving riff. This song smacks of ‘ENGEL’ from ‘Sehnsucht’, what with its driving riff and uplifting effects, and because of the female vocals. It’s not quite as good as the previous onslaught of excellent music but it will still get you jumping to its riff and chorus.
‘ZWITTER’ is next and its one of my personal favorites. There’s a fast head banging riff to start us off before Till comes in singing ‘Zwitter Zwitter’(which funnily enough means Hermaphrodite in German) and then a uplifting, melodic, but energetic chorus breaks in before the heavy riffs return for another Onslaught. This is what makes Rammstein so good. The heavy driving pounding riffs that really get you up and jumping.
The following song is no exception to that ‘REIN RAUS’ is a short-ish song, but what it lacks in length it makes up for it heaviness it’s a relentless pounding song that has Till growling, REIN! RAUS! Simple lyrics make for a great song in this case, nice use of the double bass drum too for extra force, by now you will be getting tired though, these songs are relentless.
Just when you think it should start dying down now ‘ADIOS’ slams you in the face. Starting off with just a little alarm sound it soon breaks out into another heavy energetic riff, much like Zwitter! There some softer moments in this album but they don’t last song breaking into a pounding, double bass ridden chorus with some little guitar solos and system of a down style sonics. Another song with an epic feel to it, but it’s not quite the end.
‘NEBEL’ is the final track on this short but very, very sweet album and it’s a lot softer then the previous tracks, but that’s not always a good thing. At first there doesn’t appear to be much meat on this song, until about half way through it breaks into an uplifting guitar riff and some great vocals make for another epic-feel song. It’s not done quite as well as Mutter, or Adios but it’s still a good song.
So that was it over 45 minutes of non stop relentless industrial metal that includes some of the best songs I have ever heard from a band and defiantly the best for getting into a head banging mood. Whether its sound tracking a fiery action movie or backing an epic video Rammstein cover all ground and take no prisoners Mutter surpasses everything the band has done before and leaves us longing for more, this album is a must buy for rock and metal fans.
Rammstein can’t really shake off their German imagine, a lot of the songs sound like marching songs, but Front man Till doesn’t care. All he cares about is bringing the world more of his tremendous vocals, and relentless music, frankly though if that’s all he cares about then we can look forward to good things in the future, very good things!

Advantages: Powerful rock music with strong choruses... Disadvantages: Sung in German, which may put off the casual listener (i'd recommend it anyway.)
