Advantages: Classic , fresh , raw , entertaining , a little piece of history . Disadvantages: May be too dated for some .
made Cash known to a far larger audience than ever before. The humour of this song, as a brand new effort , went down a storm at San Quentin. It may sound corny now but it was fresh and different then.
Track Twelve - (There?ll Be) Peace in the Valley.
This is one of my favourite JohnnyCash recordings. It almost has the feel of a church hymn. The varying voices of Cash and the female singers are so restful that they must have been appealing to the prisoners serving life-sentences.
Track Thirteen - Folsom Prison Blues *
After Boos for the warden JohnnyCash?s ?Ah you don?t really mean that? hit?s the spot. Folsom prison blues gives Cash a chance at the start to introduce all the band members, before it storms into full swing. It is a light-hearted quick paced track on a heavy subject and is a foot tapping tune.
Track Fourteen ...
Advantages: Play - When you're weary and feeling small... Disadvantages: Don't Play - When you're with your skater buddies.
This fabulous album was robbed of being the last throw by the late, great JohnnyCash by the dodgy decision to release American V, a wholly lesser album.
So If you have no other Cash recording in your collection you must get this one. It's the voice of a reformed hell-raiser, drug addict and truly God-fearing man on the brink of final personal oblivion. It's difficult to tell when the tremble in his voice is emotion and when it's simple frailty. I like to believe it's the one caused by the other.
Stand-out tracks - The monumental "Hurt" is the show-stopper here, made more emotional by the realisation that Cash is singing with first-hand experience of the subject matter.
The cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is a close second for track of the album. Succinct and direct acoustic guitar backing pushes the song along nicely ...
Advantages: Totaly Definitive Album Disadvantages: None Whasoever Buy It and Make your life Better
For definitive albums you don't get much more definitive than this one. JohnnyCash backed by the Tennassee three and others, playing to 2000 inmates and armed guards at Folsam Prison.
The album kicks off in fine style with "Folsam Prison Blues" with the tennassee three Boom-chicka-Booming in fine style and goes down a storm with the crowd. There is also a good selection of songs paying "tribute" to Johnny's toubled past, such as "Cocaine Blues" and the gallows humor of "25 Minutes to Go". Cash's bas baritone is also in fine form throughout the recording which is especially good on the very soulful rendition of "The Green Green Grass Of Home"
The album covers pretty much the whole of Johnnys repotire filled to the brim with songs about Murder, Crime, Drinking, Drugs, Love, Spirituality and Twisted Humor. This album is pretty much ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Johnny Cash (vocals). Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash and Sylvie Simmons. Previously released as the fourth disc in the UNEARTHED box set, MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK, like the lauded AMERICAN RECORDINGS album, features only two instruments--Johnny Cash's acoustic guitar and his unmistakable baritone voice. Recorded at Cash's cabin in rural Tennessee, this spare, unadorned set consists of classic country gospel standards handpicked by Cash from the hymnal of the title. The contents run from the heavenly ode "Where We'll Never Grow Old" to the sauntering "I Am a Pilgrim," and the redemptive "I'll Fly Away." Despite the Man in Black's failing health at the time of this recording, he sounds amazingly vital and notably moved on each and every song. Cash writes in the liner notes, "On that album, I nailed it. That was me....I'm so glad that I got that done." The overwhelming sense of completion and closure is especially fitting, since HYMN BOOK is the final set of songs recorded by Cash with the specific intention of an album. As a testament to a remarkable man and his unshakable faith, nothing could be more fitting.
