Now I like my music varied, but lyrics are my thing, be it Bacharach and David, Rickie Lee Jones or Simon and Garfunkel. (that doesn't explain why I like YES, but there has to be some mystery in everyone's life).

I also love what could be called "vocal stylists" rather than singers. For example Nick Appollo Forte in Woody Allen's "Broadway Danny Rose", Tony Bennett et al.

My mum and dad brought me up listening to Jim Reeves, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey, which is cruel treatment I'm sure nowadays social services might be interested in. However as I get older, I realise what great performers these people were and top of the heap is Ol blue eyes, Frank Sinatra.

I've just bought a double CD "My Way" on Warner and it has all the great man's hits. The one that clinched it for me, and believe me it's worth the price of admission for this one track alone, is "It was a very good year" an Ervin Drake (no me neither) song. Sopranos fans will recognise it as it was the song played over the first few minutes of the second series.Now maybe it's because I've just turned 40 and have been reminiscing a bit about my life, but this song struck a chord. Ok maybe I never knew "small town girls and soft summer nights" at 17 or "City girls who lived up the stair, with all that perfumed hair which came undone when I was 21". In my case it would have been " fame-watching-Welsh nurses in starched white uniforms" , which doesn't scan so well.

This is a great song beautifully sung and if you're my age or older and don't feel moved by it you ain't human.

Other highlights include "Summer wind" "love's been good to me" and other all the "Chairman of the board"'s standards.

The CD was re released recently I think, so try and pick it up, stick it on the CD player (yes I know it's nowhere near as romantic as candlelight playing on a spinning LP), open a battle of Italian red, smooch with your best gal and wallow in superb songs beautifully sung.
