A fascinating illustration of the changes wrought by the waning folk revival, this ample ... more
set culls 31 performances from the Newport Folk Festivals from 1963 to '68, surely the event's most vital and traditionally grounded years. While the urban folk culture long looked at commercial country music with suspicion (the feeling was mutual), musical affinities gradually won out. This set captures the excitement of those changes. Hearing Mother Maybelle Carter introduce and then steam through "Cannonball Blues" is alone worth the asking price. The recording quality is rugged in places, but where else can you hear live performances from Ike Everly and son Don, and six full band cuts from Roy Acuff and his Smokey Mountain Boys (including a thrilling "Dixie Breakdown," a banjo set piece for Larry McNeely)? --Roy Kasten

Advantages: Close to key attractions, comfortable, clean Disadvantages: Few restaurants & shops nearby, no non-allergenic pillows!
This hotel is situated in the Downtown area of Nashville which is an important consideration if going toNashville; if you are going for the country music experience this is the place to stay. However, this is not a shopping area - only a few souvenir shops in the area and little else. You are opposite the Country Music Hall of Fame, though, and around the corner is the Ryman auditorium - former home of the Grand Ole Opry. Also round the corner is the famous strip where you'll find all the Honky Tonk bars such as "Robert's Western World" and "The Black Orchid".
My first impression was a good one; the vast reception area is cool and spacious dominated by two glass elevators which glide silently to the upper floors. There is a walkway on each floor with views down into the foyer. Striking tropical plants filled the spaces between ...
Advantages: Value for money, good facilities, near "Music City" centre Disadvantages: Bus ride to malls if you're there for the shopping
that in British Holiday Inn Express.) Hotel had copious "all you can eat" buffet breakfast, and no-one seemed to mind you taking out "supplies" for sustenance during the day. Nice bonus was the free afternoon snack of bbq sausages and popcorn which were dispensed around tea time in the lobby.
This hotel has an excellent fitness room with all imaginable equipment and a small but adequate outdoor swimming pool with loungers for chilling out.
Lots of families were in evidence and all seemed to be having a great time at the hotel. Location is pretty good - 15/20 minute walk to the centre of town for the various musical bars, performance venues etc. Note that Nashville's main shopping centres are out of town and best reached by bus or hire car. Not much shopping even for general items in the centre, the hotel does have a small shop ...
Advantages: friendly, safe, cheap clothes and I could go on and on Disadvantages: Not direct flight from the UK
When we told our American on line friends that we were going on holiday toNashville, Tennessee they all said "what the hell do you want to go to that Hick town for".
Well we went and cannot wait to return.
Nashville is the home of Country and Western music and literally everywhere you go you hear music. It is great. Everywhere we went people were friendly.
If you can, go places by bus and this will give you the chance to meet and talk to the locals.
All the shops/malls are on the outskirts of the town but the bus fares are one price whether you go one stop or to the end of the line. This way you not only see more but all the locals will chat to you and point out all the places of interest.
Shopping is great. Very cheap clothes and tools and computer items.
Walking at night was safe. Shops open late but not ...
