Advantages: A really good read Disadvantages: not exactly a guidebook
This is a review of Neither Here nor There only; not of the dual volume with the Lost Continent, so please no comments about the Lost Continent being lost from this op.
I bought this book at WH Smiths, Charing Cross Station as with many of my book purchases. It retails for £7.99, although you can now purchase it as mentioned in a double volume with the Lost Continent, another of Brysons works.
Bill Bryson, a short, tubby bearded American hailing from Des Moines, has a penchant for travelling and has become world famous (and very rich, one suspects) as a result of documenting his many travels in a series of humorous travel books. The New Statesman refers to his books as ?the Animal House of the genre?, and I have to agree ? not for Bryson the bright lights and the glamour of Europe, rather he tends to encounter the seedier side ...
Advantages: A unique and interesting experience, some fascinating sights Disadvantages: Can be a confusing and not as beautiful as most European capital cities
General Impressions
Let me start this review by saying nothing in Moscow is easy. We spent a great deal of time in confusion! This is partly because of the language barrier. Advantages: A couple of funny moments Disadvantages: It's sexist, puerile and deeply unfunny
expression because he's devoid of his own body. He does lack expression, but that's more because he's devoid of acting talent, sticking to one-note belligerence and occasional perviness. His brother Shawn fares even worse as desperate-to-be-a-dad Darryl. He just comes across as unbearably wet, making him a deserving stooge for slapstick. Having seen Kerry Washington in "Ray", I know she can act, but she is miscast as Darryl's wife Vanessa. She seems ill-at-ease with the broad comedy of the piece, never throwing herself into the role. And though much of this may be down to the poor script, she sometimes appears embarrassed by the words coming out of her mouth and she lacks comic timing.
As Vanessa's father, John Witherspoon is about the only cast member to have got the measure of the script. He throws away lines with ease and puts ...
