Released in April 2004 this is the first installment of a two part Rock Metal Opera by one of rocks most controversial bands W.A.S.P. Not only is it a rock opera but it's the first of a two part concept album which is very unusual. The Neon God Part 1 subtitled The Rise (the second installment subtitled The Demise) is a 14 track cd that tells the story of a young orphan (Jesse Slane) who has been abused by the nuns that run the orphanage he is incarcerated in. Each of the 14 tracks charts a part of the story as the young orphan tries to come to terms with his own existence, the abuse he is suffering, the hypocrisy of religion, the discovery of the power of drugs and sex and a newly discovered talent that allows him to read and manipulate people who will worship him as the Neon God. Each Track is loaded with classic W.A.S.P riffs that meld seamlessly with front man Blackie Lawless unique and unforgettable vocals, creating modern symphony that carry's on from track to track.
The tracks get better and better as they progress through the album culminating with The Raging Storm which will bring you out in goose bumps. Although there are 14 tracks four of them (2. why am I here, 5. why am I nothing, 10. someone to love me, and 12. me and the devil) have less than a minute play time. This is made up by the fact that most of the other songs are five and six minutes long and 4. Sister Sadie being almost 8 minutes long.
This is a very interesting and creative album which has very deep and disturbing messages, but even if you throw all that darker stuff to one side you are left with a great heavy metal album and a W.A.S.P classic.
You will discover something new every time you listen to this cd and if that's not enough the cover inlay is a mini novel that tells the story of Jesse Slane which can be followed as each song is played. It's a good but depressing read and you might need glasses as the print is very small.
If you looking for something unusual in the rock metal genre this is a must, if you're easily offended by explicit lyrics or religious criticism this is one to avoid. Ether way it is a very creative album.
