the soundtrack to The Harder They Come), but they started life as a sweet, doowop style ska band. Never Grow Old, their debut album from 1963 (with four bonus tracks added), features the clear harmonies of teenage Toots soaring out over tight back-up from the Maytals and Don Drummond's up-beat Skatalities horn section. A blend of gospel, soul and the Jamaican beat, songs such as the exuberant "Six and Seven Books of Moses", the optimistic "I'll Never Grow Old" and "Sweet Sweet Johnny" ably show why Toots was originally known as "the Jamaican Otis Redding". ...'s a legend in Jamaica, who died in 2003. This is probably his most famous song and could make your granny dance.
*3-By The Rivers Of Babylon*
The original rastafarian anthem by the 'Melodians'. Always makes me cry and I'm as white as tripe! Boney M, eat your hearts out!

Jimmy Cliff again. Slow tear jerking lament about the weary trudge through life. Start looking for that half bottle of whisky!
*5-Sweet And Dandy*
Performed by 'Toots and the Maytals' who were one of the groups who bridged the gap between Rock-Steady and modern reggae. You can dry your eyes, I've never heard a Maytals' track that hasn't uplifted me. If you like this, check out a CD called 'Funky Kingston'.
*6-Harder They Come*
Jimmy Cliff singing the title track. Basic bread and butter reggae.
*7-Johnny Too Bad*
Performed by the 'Slickers' another...

...---WHAT'S THIS THEN?---
It's a 3CD, 50-track box-set collating early reggae tracks from a record label called Trojan. Set up in Britain in the mid-1960's, as a subsiduary of the Island label, it was intended as a menas of bringing the hot new sounds of Jamaica over to the ex-pats living in the UK.
With a growing Caribbean community in the UK, the label couldn't fail. It continued to function through to the mid-1980's and enjoyed a boom in the early 1970's when first the burgeoning skinhead movement and then, later, the punks, grasped the similarities between their ideals and reggae's. The Clash were probably the most high-profile punk band to use reggae''s influence in their music, most notably with the dubby Bank Robber.
In the mid-70's Trojan fell behind the times and subsequently went into administration. They were brought out...
