The guitars start jittering, then "BOOMA-ABOOMA-ABOOMA-ABOOM!", the drums kick in and grunge splatters itself all over a generation of MTV viewers. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will surely always speak to alienated teenagers, while giving them something to thrash around their rooms to, kicking the whole thing off as it means to go on. "Come As You Are" is dark and twisted, while "Lithium" and "In Bloom" show Kurt Cobain's often overlooked sense of humour, and "Stay Away" highlights the best way to shred your vocal chords. It's nigh-impossible not to love this album, and it will remain Nirvana's most affectionately remembered work. It's just a shame that a misplaced sense of "selling out" (stupid term if ever there was one) led to such an internal rejection of "...Teen Spirit". A work of genius, no question. --Emma Johnston

Advantages: start of the 'grunge' revolution Disadvantages: Cobain's inner misery
...in effect, the release of Nevermind in 1991, and it’s subsequent 15 odd million sales, came more down to the radio-friendly tracks. Kurt (a man more intelligent than some would have you think), knew that the set formula of ‘Bleach’ wouldn’t last another album, and set about changing the bands sound and in effect, target audience. Of course were I to ask for a track from the album, the majority would respond with ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, when in ... ...on from Cobain’s suicide and Nevermind continues to sell like hot-cakes, something that alone shows you the influence that the man and his band still have today, with the name ‘Nirvana’ being passed down through generations of families (yes it may sound far fetched but believe me, it’s true). Nevermind is, to me, the greatest album in the history of rock, not because of the fact that it’s a Nirvana record, but because each and every song gives a ...

Advantages: Great Album That Launched a 1000 Bands Disadvantages: Pretty Much a Blatant Pixies Rip Off
Nevermind hits the three quarter century of reviews on Ciao and I though it would be nice for someone who was actually there to write a review about it. Way back in the late 80’s music was stagnating and there was no good rock music getting to get general public in this country. Hair Metal and Thrash ruled the day, and the days were long dark and horrible. Hair metal was evil and needed to be killed, Thrash had the initial anger of punk but failed ... ...Indie music at the time had too few great bands, rave culture was becoming increasingly moronic, and by ’89 there was a feeling that something was going to hit. I got into the Pixes at this time through a friend and he dragged me to see Nirvana at the Calton Studios in Edinburgh sometime in 89 or 90 or 91, I can’t remember exactly when mainly due to the amount of fantastic drugs around at the time (1). However I was completely blown away by them, ...

Advantages: Powerful music only matched after its release, but a depth unrivalled to this day Disadvantages: An ironic depth to the album, which many won't or simply can't understand
...and The Stooges then only NEVERMIND can prove you wildly mistaken because like all artistic masterpieces it transcends its genre magnificently. The sole reason, with the brilliance of the band that now included David Grohl from the Foo Fighters, came in the form of its constructor Kurt Cobain, an illustriously troubled and thoughtful master of contradictions.

As a footnote, the album doesn't end without getting in a final gesture of defiance. About fifteen minutes after 'Something In The Way', a hidden song appears. A typical grunge song, all guitar and distortion, but of such accuracy in its depiction of what grunge fans wanted to hear (the same hardcore grunge fans ...

Pure Quality Review ofNevermind - Nirvana (US)by
KurtDonaldCobain
Advantages: The beggining of a new era in music.A must have. Disadvantages: ,
Nevermind by Nirvana (1991) Smells Like Teen Spirit- Undoubtably Nirvana's best known song mainly as it toppedthe charts in numerous countries all over the world. Every part of this song is excellent from the skillfull guitar intro which sticks in your head, to the amazing lyrics song sung in Kurt Cobain's classic rugged voice. A classic and a new sound to musicone of my favourite songs of all-time. Favourite lyrics 'I found it hard it was hard to ... ...Smells Like Teen Spirit sets an amazing trend for this album you would think it would be hard to chose a second song to back up the classic that is Smells Like Teen Spirit. In Bloom covers this excellently showing that Kurt can actually sing. In Bloom covers excellent lyrics telling of people who like to sing along to Nirvana But don't actually understand what Kurt is saying in his songs. Favourite Lyrics- 'We Can ask for more/ Nature is a w****/ ...

Advantages: A seminal album. powerful, damaged, yet still melodic Disadvantages: Fourteen minutes of dead air on the disc before the hidden track.
Has it really been 10 years? I still remember the first time I listened to this album. It was my Dad’s car, and we were racing around the Lake District whilst the stereo was kicking out “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at an obscene volume. This was just prior to my real discovery of music, and the birth of my real passion, but, even to my untrained ears, the sound of loud music coupled with acceleration seemed to evoke something primal.
... ...know, was released in 1991, referred to by a few US underground gurus as “The Year Punk Broke”. It was Nirvana’s second album, and their first on a major label. Propelled by heavy MTV play for the video of the aforementioned “…Teen Spirit”, it helped spearhead the “alternative revolution”, as more noisy rock bands started to appear in the musical mainstream, such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl ...
