In 1991 when "Nevermind" was released no one could have possibly foretold just how massive it was to become. From the cover photo, spitting into the face of every capitalist American, to the superb diversity of the cultured rock contained, this was and is an album to change the world. And so begins my track by track run through. Enjoy!
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Beginning the album, as you no doubt already know is the undying classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The dark background and soul poured into Kurt's music rest's firmly in this song, the closing melody from his gigs purely for the reason that if he was on his last guitar it couldn't survive Teen Spirit. This loud song of that unending formula of a quiet chorus and intense bridge sets the mood perfectly for the album, getting the head-rush going, ready to ebb and flow throughout.
Bloom
Next up we have "Bloom"
the lyrics of which in part adorn the inside cover. The loud start setting the scene and some sweetly ironic lyrics carrying throughout. The guitar present is of the highest tradition of rock, and in the solos, Hendrix would be proud.
Come As You Are
Another incredibly well known song, with Kurt trying as many have done before, to put a stop to the lying and deceit, something he attempted to achieved through his music. Again superb guitar solos making full use of the stereo of your sound system, with the echoes rolling from left to right in smooth entrancing rhythm.
Breed
As our Fourth we have "Breed" with grunge guitar beginning and a similar style to follow. Taking the best from Bleach this (in my opinion) classic, opens up the album perfectly with the persistent rolling guitar induced background and deafening chorus, then you know you’ve found one of the LP’s best..
Lithium
From this we flow easily into another quiet opening, followed with a psychedelic screaming fest of madness, continuing the perfected atmosphere created. Kurt's voice showing the seemingly infinite range of a true master, slipping seamlessly from quiet melody to the insane screaming that we all know and love.
Polly
After the insanity of Lithium the comparative quiet and calm of Polly contrasts beautifully. This completely acoustic and lyric induced melody is just so outstandingly different, to those surrounding it, that a whole new pathos is created solely for inclusion in this one song. The singing of Polly proving to all those purely addicted to punk and the like that you don't need an electric or drums to make a classic.
Territorial Pissings
A very American start to this one reminds us that we have a punk / rock album. Again taking the listener right back to the feel of Lithium. The drums are back in force as is the screaming being used to full effect as before, the lyrics indicating everyone's inward rush for a better life and a new way of living.
Drain You
Staying in the realm of the psychedelic comes “Drain You”. This superb divergence of styles containing some lovely finger work by all guitarists involved, and while I know I mention this too much, Kurt is fantastic throughout.
Lounge Act
Another conversion of sanity to the encrazed as we begin with some adorable lyrics surly from Kurt's life at some point. The screaming seems out of want more then necessity in making the song. The master's heart continues to come across more then ever.
Stay Away
"Stay Away" starts off loud and gets louder. The bitter yelling, again with evident relevance to our everyday lives, is highly effective adding it's wholehearted contribution to the album.
On A Plain
Kurt's possible distance from Courtney or some other part of life is shown as he talks of being set apart "on a plain". His pain continues to be evident in this noisy intensive song, mainly concentrating on the screaming aspect this time round.
Something In The Way
In the final track as so often happens we come into contact with quiet. The calming influence of "Something In The Way" after a long period of unwavering rock is welcome in the way it should be. The ending drifting off into silence as the gap before the secret track begins.

And that, as they say, is it. Hope I've been some help in showing just what a truly mind-blowing album this is and the intentions behind it.
