‘Nevermind’ is the one of seven Nirvana albums, and without a doubt the most recognizable. Not only for the unforgettable front cover of the naked baby underwater and the dollar bill on a fishing line, but also for having most of Nirvana’s most famous songs on it.
Smells Like Teen Spirit Is there anyone on this God forsaken planet that does not know this song! I have yet to discover an album that has a better opening track than this one. Smells Like Teen Spirit is the song that made Nirvana the legend that it is today. It is also quite a strange song. The actual tune itself isn’t particularly difficult to play, nor the lyrics difficult to remember. However, if you try to do them both at the same time, as Kurt did, it is near impossible! I dont think that I will ever get tired of hearing this song...ever!
In Bloom The usual grungy sound is in full effect in this song. The deep growl of the guitar and the bang of the drums are entwined in perfect unison to open the track. As Nirvana songs go, this despite having a reasonably heavy tune, has lyrics that could easily suit a more mellow song. You may not agree, but that’s just my humble opinion. Check out the video, where the band impersonates a 1950's rock and roll trio in a Buddy Holly stylee, it’s quite freaky!
Come As You Are Another of Nirvana's most famous songs. The simplistic intro is joined first by a simple drumbeat and then baseline. It never seices to amaze me just how such a simple song like this one can sound so good. Infact, its almost ambiguous. The song is a mellow heavy song,
adding to its genius! Even the solo in the middle of the song is simple, but sounds good! I think that’s the best way to describe this song.... simple. It does however contain the biggest lie that Kurt Cobain ever told, depending on your opinion on his death...."Well I swear that I dont have a gun!"
Breed This track opens with the familiar rock sound of feedback! As with most Nirvana songs, the guitar riffs are simple. Although, this is understandable, as to play complicated tunes, whilst singing would be very difficult. However, for the first time on this album, that I could pick up anyway, the bass lines are different to the guitar tunes, and you can hear them. This song does however have a decent enough solo.
Lithium Another change happens to the album at this point. So far all the songs intros have been played on guitar. However, on this, one of the best songs on this album, bassist Chris Novoselic takes center stage and produces possibly the most famous Nirvana bass intro. Im not really sure how to describe the rest of the track properly. It makes you feel like you want to go mad, but isn’t a manic song (if that makes any sense!). Check out the video for this song. It’s a collage of different times Nirvana played this live. It includes the destroying of copious instruments and Kurt jumping into the drum kit whilst on stage at the Reading Festival.
Polly This is a song with a hidden meaning. At a first listen, you would think that it was about a bird of some kind, whereas actually it is about a rape! The song is an acoustic song, and after the volume of the previous tracks it is welcomed. It is another unusual song, not only for Nirvana, but also for any band, as there are no drums featured in it really. There is the odd cymbal crash, but no real beat. Dave Grohl therefore provides the backing vocals. Another quality song though.
Territorial Pissings I cannot decide whether I really like this song. It opens with some ropey singing, and is then accompanied by a quick, distorted, almost thrashy guitar piece that gets joined by a drum roll and the song progresses. What Polly lacked in volume this song makes up for it. Kurt screams so hard that at some points his voice nearly gives in! The further into the song you get the better, in my opinion, it gets.
Drain You Almost as soon as the prior track finishes, this one begins. I wouldn’t say that it was a quiet song, but it’s certainly more chilled out than the song before! One strum on the guitar, and the vocals kick in. The contrast between the first strum and the rest of the guitars in the song is quite unusual. The first sounds like it is done on an acoustic guitar, whereas the rest of the song is done with a detuned electric. It’s not a bad song, but I wouldn’t say that it was one of my favorite Nirvana songs.
Lounge Act Another bass solo to open this one, followed by drums, and finally joined by guitars. Again, not one of the best songs they did, but by no means one of the worst. It is however a very short song, at only 2:36 long. It has the typical Nirvana feel to it, and is easy to listen to...average.
Stay Away One rapid drum roll to bring Stay Away to your ears, joined with the bass. It seems like Kurt was getting a bit tired by this point, and was letting the others do the hard parts! The lyrics to this song are just messed up. They make no sense whatsoever, well...what you hear makes no sense. The lyrics are..."Monkey-see, monkey-do (I dont know why), Id rather be dead than cool (I dont know why), Every line ends in rhyme (I dont know why), Love is warm love is blind (I dont know why)." However, I think it sounds more like "Monkey-see, monkey-do (Ah no way), That would be deadly cool (Ah no way), Every line ends in rhyme (Ah no way), Love is warm love is blind (Ah no way)." again, it is probably just me, but this song is weird. I know that its all waffle, but I just thought that I would share it with you! It does however end with a cool outro, of basically feedback.
On A Plain This also starts with a random intro, similar to the outro from the song before. It then stops, there is a second of silence, and the song starts! It’s quite clear that Kurt was smacked of his face when he wrote some of these songs. They are just so random! Once the song starts though, it’s worth it. It’s kind of a feel good song. It is definitely one for going on holiday, especially (surprisingly enough) if you are traveling on an airplane (despite the totally different meanings of the two words)! It ends with some eerie moans.
Something In The Way The moans mentioned in the song before lead quite nicely onto the final and most mellow song on the album, well...in reality, its the ONLY mellow song on the album! There isn’t really anything to this song. It makes you feel strange inside, especially if you have listened to the whole album all the way through. It just doesn’t fit in. On its own, it is a very good song, especially the version on the unplugged in New York album for MTV. The majority of the song only uses the bass and Kurt's voice. No guitar and no drums. Im not entirely sure if he plays the guitar throughout the whole song! A very strange song.
All rock fans…. go and buy this album now!
