The second offering from these three Wakefield brothers (Ryan, Gary and Ross Jarman) is even more stunning than the first. This criminally undervalued band who repeatedly prove they're not in it for the music (even going so far as to condone fans not buying their releases) have poured their hearts into this album, which fuses the knarly exuberant sound of The Libertines, with the jagged rock of The Kaiser Chiefs, blending in elements of Orange Juice, The Clash, The Beatles and dozens of other influences, making The Cribs' sound completely unique and weirdly catchy.
The opening track, Hey Scenesters, which reached number 27 in the UK music charts, is 3minutes 11 seconds of bouncing jerky electro-rock, a storming outpouring against the "Scenesters" who overrun many music scenes and groups because they think its "cool". A classic opener to this album, probably one of my favourite tracks 9.5/10
Track 2, aptly titled I'm Alright Me is definitely a bit of alright, the catchy riff instantly hooks you in, possibly the only downfall of this song is the recording, occasionally making the sound slightly fuzzy. 7/10
Track 3 - Martell Miniatures, the lyrics "So you hate my sunglasses?", completely sum up this song, catchy and tongue-in-cheek they bounce their way through the 2.57 mins of this classic, complete with "woah-ah-oh's", a perfect sing-along song. 8/10
Track 4 - Mirror Kisses, their second release off this album, which reached number 2 in the Indie music charts, criminally kept off number one only by that Crazy Frog ringtone, is an even more storming get-up-and dance song, definitely one of my numerous favourites from this album 9/10
Track 5 - We Can No Longer Cheat You. This track illuminates the influence The Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand have had on The Cribs; probably my least favourite track on this album in terms of the verses redeems itself by the addictive chorus, but still doesn't reach the standard of the rest of the album 6/10
Track 6 -It Was Only Love, Ryan's voice is on top form on this track, deep and tuneful the only let down on this beautiful song is the sound quality, again slightly fuzzy, but it complements the understated melody enough to be virtually unnoticeable 8/10
Track 7 - The New Fellas, another rip-roaring track, proving the Cribs are the new fellas, not my favourite track on the album, but still an impressive offering from the boys 7/10
Track 8 - Hello Oh, A great song, melodic and impressive this song shows influences of The Beatles and The Libertines taking you on a rollercoaster of musical adventure 8.5/10
Track 9 - The Wrong Way To Be, definitely not the wrong way for this song to be, another classic, uniquely twisting their sound, with each song completely different this one once again captures the attention, a rocking song 8/10
Track 10 - Haunted - This haunting song is sweet and poignant, a little let down by Ryan's vocals, which are much better suited to their favoured more energetic songs than this ballad 6/10
Track 11 - Things Aren't Gonna Change - A Storming end to an amazing album, this song epitomises everything The Cribs are amazing at and is definitely my favourite song on this album 10/10
This album can be found at most high street stores, from anywhere upward of £9.99, but local small record shops are quite likely to have it cheaper, my local independent store has it for £8.99, more info about it can be found at www.beatentracks.co.uk.
An amazing album, fusing flawless melodies with genius lyrics, well worth buying.
