It took almost 20 years into her career before the big break came for Bonnie Raitt; and one that she truly deserved. The album of a lifetime was released in 1989 - 'Nick of Time.'
Although she had a great following of devoted and dedicated fans built up from her 70's prolific tours and acclaimed records, it took a change of label to Capitol records and a new producer, Don Was, to open the door to the biggest break ever.
From this complete change, the album 'Nick of Time' was produced and in 1990 three trophies were awarded to Bonnie at the Grammy Awards for Album of the year, Best Female Rock Vocal and Best Female Pop Vocal performance. This album went on to sell over five million copies as it shot into the number one slot on the charts.
Seventeen years on and Bonnie Raitt is still going strong , and still making albums; the latest one being 'Souls Alike.'
Bonnie's voice is 'soulfully' unforgettable and a pleasure to listen to. As an accomplished slide guitarist and pianist too, not only is she gorgeous but she has much talent at her fingertips and has a record of experience behind her, after receiving her first guitar at eight years old.
'Nick of Time' is a great album to listen to, and the following information will give you an insight into each song briefly.
There are eleven tracks and these are:
Nick of Time, Thing called Love, Love Letter, Cry on my Shoulder, Real Man, Somebody's Girl, Have a Heart, Too Soon to Tell, I Will not be Denied, I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again, The road's my Middle Name.
All the songs are about life's experiences which is probably why the listener can so identify with them and mean something to them. There is a track for everyone on this album.
1. NICK OF TIME This song is easy to listen to but is thought-provoking and written about a friend of Bonnie's whose biological clock was slowly running out, .but just in the 'nick of time' finds love. The piano is played by Raitt on this track.
2. THING CALLED LOVE Good bass riff for intro and then lead and drums following in. Great foot-stomping beat with the slide guitar making a notable first entrance on the album.
3.LOVE LETTER This is nicely toned down, with a slow sexy drum intro. Bonnie's soulful voice is so pleasing to the ear and do I hear a hint of slide guitar mimic in that voice? Some raunchy vocals come into play too.
4.CRY ON MY SHOULDER Well, I guess we have all needed a shoulder to cry on and also been a shoulder to cry on too. This is what this song is about. With gentler instrumentals, Raitt's voice is heard to it's full potential.
5.REAL MAN Great drum and piano, and another foot-tapping track. There are some great blues sounds in this song with Bonnie's sensual vocals and accomplished slide guitar playing.
6. SOMEBODY'S GIRL A really gentle song here with some very accomplished guitar picking. Relaxed and easy -listening track.
7.HAVE A HEART Some reggae undertones in this track . Quite a mix of sounds which have come together in unity impeccably.
8.TOO SOON TO TELL Slow, sensual, relaxing intro. Wonderful for that smooch dance you've been meaning to have for a long time. The pedal steel makes appearance here, played very adeptly by J D Maness.
9.I WILL NOT BE DENIED & 10. I AIN'T GONNA LET YOU BREAK MY HEART AGAIN These are more laid-back tracks; ones that you can lean back in a comfy chair, close your eyes and de-stress! The quietest one is number 10 where it is just Bonnie Raitt's vocals and Herbie Hancock's piano that delivers. A jazzy feel comes through both the vocals and the instrumentals.
11.THE ROAD'S MY MIDDLE NAME Wonderfully blues, baby! I love this track because of it's blues feel and Raitt's raunchy vocals. Good foot-stomping song to end the album on.
There is such a variety of musical genre here such as blues, rock & pop, a little jazz, which is impeccably mixed and produces a crackingly sharp and faultless production.
The album is still easily obtainable at all good record stores and online.
Album Notes: Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocal, slide guitar, piano); Johnny Lee Schell (acoustic guitar), Michael Landau, Arthur Adams (guitar); J.D. Maness (epdal steel guitar); Marty Grebb (tenor saxophone); Kim Wilson (harmonica); Scott Thurston, Jerry Williams, Herbie Hancock (piano); Michael Ruff, Don Was (keyboards); Chuck Domanico (acoustic bass); Hutch Hutchinson (bass); Ricky Fataar (drums, percussion); Tony Braunagel (drums, percussion, timbales); Fran Christina (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion, congas); Arnold McCuller, Sir Harry Bowens, Sweet Pea Atkinson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Larry John McNally, David Lasley (background vocals). The Heart Attack Horns: Bill Bergman, Dennis Farias, Greg Smith, John Berry, Jr. NICK OF TIME was the 1989 Grammy winner for Album Of The Year. Although famed primarily for her interpretation of compositions by the likes of Joni Mitchell, John Hiatt, James Taylor and Paul Brady, NICK OF TIME includes two fine Raitt-penned songs. "The Road's My Middle Name" is an up-tempo blues number, harking back to her early career performing alongside Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell. The title track is one of her best, a sensitive examination of the traumas of ageing. Throughout the album her voice is haunting and controlled, bringing new meaning and depth to a varied range of material. Bonnie turned 40 gracefully with this album and it gave her unexpected massive success just in the nick of time.
