bouzouki); Sara Watkins (vocals, violin, strings). NICKEL CREEK was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and Ode To A Butterfly was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance.NICKEL CREEK is the appealing debut album by this quartet of young bluegrass/folk musicians. Mandolinist Chris Thile kicks things off with a display of virtuosity on Ode to a Butterfly, negotiating the twists and turns of the melody with seemingly effortless abandon. All four musicians seem incredibly sure-footed and comfortable in each other's company. Bassist Scott Thile shines in an often under-appreciated role--his round sound and perfect intonation provide the harmonic underpinning and subtle rhythmic cushion that lends buoyancy to the ensemble sound. The production values are exceptionally high on this project, reflecting the intense musicality of producer Alison Krauss, an instrumental and singing star in her own right. Violinist Sara Watkins contributes a tender lead vocal on the ethereal Out of the Woods, and the harmony vocals are nothing short of sublime. Sweet Afton, a setting of the famous poem by Robert Burns, shows off the group's Celtic leanings. Chris Thile's high tenor vocal is heart stopping.[Reviews]Down Beat (7/00, p.76) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - The most amazing music in this batch [of reviews] comes from this kiddie bluegrass band. Just a quick listen to their vocals - sweet, tender, innocent - gives them away....this band of prodigies...has a penchant also for pop, classical music and jazz.No Depression (5-6/00, pp.121-2) - ...Exuberance, innovation and sheer musical talent unite in a confident and accomplished debut....Spiking its newgrass/folk core with Celtic accents and a dash of pop....there's much to enjoy.CMJ (4/3/00, p.36) - ...Blends sweet vocal harmonies with accessible gospel melodies, fleshed out by fiddles, mandolins and guitars.n
This Side - Nickel Creek
Whereas Nickel Creek's debut album established the young California trio at the

progressive vanguard of traditional bluegrass, the ambitious, risky follow-up This Side finds their acoustic artistry straying far afield. Mandolin player Chris Thile and the Watkins siblings--guitarist Sean and fiddler Sara--continue to impress with their intuitive instrumental interplay and lush vocal harmonies. Sean Watkins's title cut achieves the sprightliest blend of traditional bluegrass instrumentation and contemporary pop craft, while the ruminative melancholy of "Hanging by a Thread" and "Green and Gray" sound as though Thile has been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith (and reading the published poetry of Jewel). The album also features Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger", Carrie Newcomer's "Should've Known Better" and the traditional ballad "House Carpenter". However, much of the collection's original material lacks the maturity to match the trio's musical gifts, as songs incorporating influences ranging from neo-psychedelia to alt pop often suffer from self-consciousness. Kindred-spirit producer Alison Krauss plainly gave the project a long leash, and the results can be viewed as either sophomore slump or creative growth spurt--or perhaps both. --Don McLeese

...THIS SOUNDTRACK IS VERY TYPICAL OF THE TV SHOW DAWSONS CREEK. THE SONGS ON IT ARE VERY MEANINGFUL AND DO MAKE U THINK. IT WILL NOT REALLY CHEER U UP IF U ARE FEELING DOWN BUT IS WELL WORTH LISTENING TO ANYWAY. A FRIEND OF MINE IS A MAJOR DAWSONS CREEK FAN AND ABSOLOUTLY LOVES THE SOUNDTRACK SO I THINK THAT IF U LOVE THE SHOW THEN THE SOUNDTRACK HAS MUCH MORE MEANING. MOST OF THE ARTISTS ON IT ARE NOT VERY WELL KNOWN, TO ME ANYWAY, BUT IT IS STILL GREAT TO LISTEN TO....

Advantages: great, thoughtful music Disadvantages:
...Dawson’s creek fan? Or mellow music fan? If you’ve watched Dawson’s Creek you’ll be familiar with the sort of music played on there. My sort of music, though not everyone’s cup of tea. Actually I like a range of music, but this still remains my favourite soundtrack.
Including songs such as”Kiss Me” by sixpence none the richer, B*witched’s “Blame it on the weatherman”, and the current series’ beautiful opening song “I don’t want to wait” by Paula Cole. My favourite is Nikki Hassman’s “Any Lucky Penny”. Well worth the money
for 16 lovely songs typical of Dawson’s Creek....
