Album Notes: There are few singers whose appeal transcends the so-called barriers of time, style, and era, and velvet-voiced pop crooner Johnny Mathis is one of them. From the romantic Great American Songbook ballads of the 1950s and '60s to Philly soul to mellow urban R&B, Mathis sang them all right on to the Top 40 charts. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is a collection that showcases Johnny in duet situations with younger peers (Yolanda Adams, Gladys Knight) and smooth jazz saxophone stars (Dave Koz, Kenny G) as well as on his own. Mathis still has that smooth, harmonious approach that has endeared him to generations of listeners.

Advantages: Some classic songs Disadvantages: Some songs sound dated now
...This album, Lauper's third, is worth getting even if you already have the "12 Deadly Cyns" greatest hits collection, because it contains "Heading west" and "A night to remember", both excellent single releases, but not huge hits, and therefore not included on that collection.
It also contains "I drove all night", which is, for me, one of her best songs. There's a 50's, yearning, feel to it, with a build up to the powerhouse chorus. "My first night without you" is another intense, emotive ballad in a similar vein. Joey Ramone had a hand in some of the production, which may well account for the Spector-style sound on these songs.
"Unconditional love" and "I don't want to be your friend" are very pleasant songs, then there's the early-Madonna-ish "Like a cat", and the funky "Dancing with a stranger".
Well worth a listen....

Advantages: Most Of Cash's well known songs are here Disadvantages: Not enough songs!
...I finished writing a review about another Johnny Cash CD I recently bought & I thought I should move on to the CD which will probably appeal more widely than the Duets CD. I started this review back in September and now it has finally come to it's conclusion!
Johnny Cash, the great man in black, enjoying a revival thanks to the film 'Walk The Line' and recent releases of new material. I have been a Cash fan for longer than I care to remember so I am glad to see the man becoming popular again and appealing to such a wide audience, not just country music fans.
Of course, the late, great Johnny Cash is no longer with us, having passed away in 2003, only months after the death of his beloved wife and musical partner, June Carter-Cash, but he seems to be just as popular today as he was in his Sun records hey day in the 60's.
