The first track “Nice Guys Finish Last” starts with a quick drum beat and loud guitars in true punk/rock/SKA style. Its a good song to start the album with as it is really upbeat and great for nice days like today. The songs really explained in the title, its about Nice guys finishing last. Next up is Hitchin’ a Ride, again starts with the drum beat then the vocals come in. The lyrics don’t seem to follow any particular meaning and sort of drift past as you find yourself humming along.
Third track on the album is about him getting old and distrusting everything that goes on and how when he was younger he had such big plans. The song starts with the vocals on there own before being joined by guitars and drums. Another typical fast paced songs with a tune you end up humming along to again.
A slower feel to “Redundant”. The drums start the song off before everything else joins in. The songs about everything being the same all the time and how you just wish it would change from time to time. Track 5 “Scattered” is another song about lost love and how he’s got the pictures all over the floor. A much faster paced song that has some real get up and go. A good one if you like singing along as the words aren’t hard to learn and its quite an enjoyable song. Although you get the feeling this is meant to be a sad song it’s quite lively musically, which adds to the appeal.
The 6th track on the Album “All The Time” was one of the first Green Day tracks I heard and thought it was superb. Another fast paced song with simple beat and easygoing lyrics. I think the great thing about Green Day is the knack they have of writing catch, easy going songs like this. A fast paced intro into “Worry Rock” but this is another song about a broken relationship, which fits in nicely in this portion of the album. Again there is a simple beat and easygoing guitars and I bet you won’t notice that you’re singing along to start with.
The next track “Platypus” is basically the sort of rant you’d want to have at someone you didn’t like at all. It’s very fast but the lyrics are basically just shouting and not much else to be honest. Goes past very quickly but the music is quite catchy as it is so fast paced. Of course if you’re not at your happiest this would be a great song to listen to.
Track 9 is “Uptight” and compared to the last one it is a completely different tempo. The instantly noticeable guitar and drum beat is there once again, with quieter lyrics. The chorus as always sticks in you’re mind and you end up joining in as it passes by. “Last Ride In” is a purely instrumental track and provides a great little interlude to the heavier rock based song. All this is done to the swishing of the waves on the beach which gives it a very peaceful feel.
Right back into it with track 11 as the drums and guitars tell you the time for a peaceful tune have gone and now were back into the loud parts. “Jinx” is basically about someone who is just the most unlucky person you could ever wish to meet. The song again carries you through and before you know it, you’ve carried straight on into track 12. The lyrics here are a little slower and clearer as the instruments play the same bit on a loop before they start to take off. The same drumbeat is used through most of the Green Day tracks, which seems to makes the tracks all seem to sound the same at times.
Track 13 “Walking Alone” is another slow starter with a harmonica intro before the lyrics come in. Of course the beat is there and again its easy to remember lyrics, which makes it a lot simpler to listen to as you’re not really thinking about it too much. This track is followed by “Reject”, which is a lot faster and sounds better for it as you may have felt you were getting into a bit of a rut with the last couple but this lifts you out and dusts you off.
The next track “Take Back” is a bit of a let down as you can’t really work out what’s being said and just seems to fly by and you end up missing it (hang on that’s a good thing). Not one that I’d recommend. Track 16 comes across as a comedy song. It’s about someone dressing up in his Mum’s clothes. “King For A Day” is a fairly amusing song and has a sort of Clown accompaniment with it as the instruments are used to sound sort of comical as well. A good song to just listen to as it doesn’t seem to stand for too much except for maybe Billie’s desire to dress up in Women’s clothes!!! Also mentions wanting his friends to see him in drag.
The next track “Good Riddance” is probably my favourite Green Day song. An acoustic song with just Billie Joe strumming away at his guitar without any thing else going on. A very beautiful song, which can be used to help you drift away or even if you’re a little sad and want to sing along to something this would be for you. Some string sections within the song really help to set the mood.
The final track on the album is “Prosthetic Head”, which is a little bit more upbeat but another good solid track with that sing a long type of feel. This time the drums and guitars are all back in full working order as there are some areas in the middle where it really lifts off then after a little goes back into a quiet sound.

Advantages: Magnificent tunes, shouty and angry Disadvantages: Last ride in
This album is Green Day's best. Weighing in with a hefty 18 tracks, it combines punk and rock with some of the traditional Green Day pop that we all love! This album is lyrically quite depressing, and the music is aggressive at times, ideal when you're in a bad mood and want to get some of that frustration out of your system. It's a great album to drive to, although it tends to make me drive very fast! NICE GUYS FINISH LAST --------------------- ... ...drums and a guitar assault. If you were asleep, you're awake now! This song is about how the nice guys always finish last in life (hence the title). Full of Billie Joe's sarcasm. HITCHIN' A RIDE --------------- Lumbers along in a kind of slouching way, until the typical blast when the guitars kick in. With a descending bassline it goes down low and then back up again. It was the first single from the album and didn't go down all that well, but I ...

Advantages: It being sung by Green Day Disadvantages: a few poor songs
... Near the close of Nimrod is "Good Riddance," an acoustic/ string- laden ballad that finds Billie Joe Armstrong taking a surprisingly tender, grown-up look into the past. "I hope you had the time of your life," he sings, acknowledging the difference between then and now -- this from a band whose breakthrough record was titled after the slang for feces (Dookie). Sometimes growing up is the right thing to do.

...the slow songs on the nimrod albums but still one of the good ones. The bass is good with plays well with the lyrics. This is a good song and is another that will be perminatly in your favourite Green Day songs after you listen to it a lot.
5: Scattered : This is one of the faster tracks on Nimrod with some really good lyrics and a great tune. The chorus is very catchy and you'll have you singing it again and again in the shower or walking down ... ...is fantastic. This is why Nimrod is the best.
7: Worry Rock : I really like this track. This is quite soft with a kind of 80's style to it. This is definitly another of my favourite which I suprisingly didnt like at first but love now. The lyrics are quite good with the chorus very catchy.
8: Platypus (I hate you) : Even form the title you can tell what kind of song this is going to be like, and you'd be right. The lyrics to this song aren't printed ...

Advantages: music you can listen and headbang to at moments! sublime! Disadvantages: if there are any I dont wanna know!
Green Day released Nimrod in 1997. It was a huge hit in America, but did not have the same effect over here. When asked to describe their music by a friend I struggled to provide a definition. Their music takes lessons from all music styles I have listened to! It is that cult teen sound that gets it into the cd player of every common room in the land and gets people singing along to lyrics they didn’t think they knew! Even Buffy the Vampire ... ...as the mind and heart. Nimrod has 18 tracks, 19 if you have the Japanese version! Straight from the first track you can hear their distinctive mix of different styles, as I will guide you through the album! *Nice guys finish last
As the song starts you can almost imagine a late 70’s punk band ready to explode into anarchistic shouting, but instead you are treated to that unmistakable voice we have come to know and love! *Hitchin’ a ride

Advantages: Green Day at there finest Disadvantages: Bit short clocking in at about 35mins
Thanks to Time of Your Life from 1997's Nimrod CD, GreenDay and their singer/guitarist/writer Billie Joe Armstrong have belatedly gotten some respect. Billie Joe has matured a little but he has been making good music since the band broke through with Dookie.
The songs on Dookie aren't cerebral but eight million Dookie buyers weren't wrong. Dookie is filled with tight, exciting adrenaline filled rock. Billie Joe's guitar playing is pretty basic but strong and the band keeps the music moving at a great, energized pace. The lyrics are juvenile but Billie Joe simply expressed his audience's confusion about growing up and not knowing where you're going. The appeal of Basket Case, is also undeniable. Billie Joe's self described melodramatic whine about feeling like he's cracking up actually has a fun, self deprecating side and the music ...
Advantages: Well crafted pop punk tunes! Disadvantages: Some may think the production has left it sounding too clean?
Calling your band Pickled Dick is probably to some people, the equivalent of hanging a blanket-covered child over a balcony; attention grabbing but for all the wrong reasons. However, band name aside (I think it's legendary), Pickled Dick are one of the better underground UK pop punk bands emerging at the moment. Think a cross between pre-NimrodGreenDay, Screeching Weasel, Mr. T Experience and a little bit of The Queers, but with a stronger emphasis on harmonies and catchy choruses. Building on their debut full length 'Panda-Moanium', this six track gives the listener more of what can be found on the first release whilst at the same time expanding their sound and giving room for creativity.
The harmonies and sing-along's are still here throughout the 20 minutes, most evident in the insanely infectious opening track 'Extra ...
Advantages: Unique among their albums so far Disadvantages: none
This is a long awaited return to the brilliance last seen on 'nimrod'.
'American Idiot' musically could have come from any GreenDay album since 'Kerplunk', however lyrically it is a step-up and a shift into a political outlook.
'Holiday' is another politically minded track that features a simple riff that could have come of off a track from 'Warning'.
'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are the masterpieces off of this album. both are over 9 mins long, and feature many different styles of guitar, and drums - these two songs alone make the album worth buying.
'Wake me up When September Ends' is a ballad that almost compares to the great 'Good Ridance (Time of Your Life)' and deserves more credit than it has been given in a lot of reviews.
The other tracks including 'Extrodinary Girl', are all brilliant and this ...
Green Day: Billie Joe (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass); Tre Cool (drums, bongos, tambourine). Additional personnel: Petra Haden (violin); Gabriel McNair, Stephen Bradley (horns). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Green Day's infectious brand of thrashy power-pop is full of references to the generation of punk which preceded them, with adenoidal vocals spinning tales of youthful angst against a backdrop of hard, fast riffs. The difference, of course, is that Green Day is having more fun than the Buzzcocks would ever have admitted to. NIMROD catches the band updating their sound while holding onto the speed and recklessness that made their previous albums so exciting. Touches like the atmospheric, flanged guitars of "Redundant" and the violin on "Hitchin' A Ride" and "Last Ride In," (courtesy of That Dog's Petra Haden) help to take the band in a new, more serious direction. Lest anyone fear that this expansion signals self-indulgence, the tight harmonies of "Scattered" and breakneck pace of "Platypus (I Hate You)" prove that, unlike most angry young men (especially those that happen to be millionaire celebrities), they've managed to hold on to every bit of the energy and rage that propelled them in the first place.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (10/30/97, p.66) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...Armstrong's juvenile sense of humor is back....a broader view, with neo-psychedelic studio touches, acoustic guitar, violins and horns....Melody is emphasized, and a measure of sincerity is detectable in the singing..." Spin (12/97, pp.154-155) - 6 (out of 10) - "...At heart, NIMROD is a poker-faced rendition of what every band before them has done in this situation--genre-hopping, `testing their boundaries' in the studio, strings, horns, the works....At times, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong even seems to be impersonating Mark Eitzel impersonating Frank Sinatra..." Entertainment Weekly (10/17/97, p.76) - "...mostly more of the same hyperactive pop-punk it introduced on 1994's DOOKIE. Hooky, too. But since the kids who once embraced the band seem to have outgrown this, will anyone other than rock critics give a hoot?" - Rating: B-
